Photo Realistic Rendering
Modeling & Rendering of American Chopper using SolidWorks
Introduction:
SolidWorks is a software mainly used to create the 3D models from 2D sketches and used to perform the CAE operations. It also provides us to add the material to models we create which can be useful when performing the CAE operations. It has also Add-in Features Photoview360 to help in rendering the final model to look more photorealistic. In this project, we learn the detailed design ideas of American chopper and ways to render the final model to obtain more photo-realistic images.
Objective:
- To Generate 3D Models of individual components of the American Chopper using SolidWorks.
- To Assemble all the Individual Components by using the Appropriate Mates Feature.
- To Explore the application of Decals, Lights & Cameras.
- To learn the use of Photoview360 and SolidWorks visualize for rendering the Final Model.
Design Approach/Methodology:
Kick Stand: A Component used to support the chopper at rest on the ground, also called a side stand.
Features Used:
- Sketch: It is 2D Geometric details of the 3D model, like line, rectangle & circle are called entity
- Loft: This feature allows us to generate complex geometry by creating interpolating surfaces between different cross-sections like faces, edges & sketches.
- Dome: This Feature is majorly applied to Selected faces or planes or no planes. We can use this feature for faces whose centroid is out of face.
- Extrude Boss/ Base: This feature allows us to convert a 2D sketch into a 3D model.
- Extrude Cut: This feature is the opposite of boss as it removes the material from already extruded models. This allows us to use this feature to create holes, channels, slots, etc.
- Fillet: This Feature creates the rounded internal and external face on the part.
- Split: This tool is used to project entity on a curved surface and can also spill the multiple Bodies
Transmission Belt: This is used to transmit power from the engine to the gearbox
Features Used:
- Sketch
- Offset: Offset help us to offset one or more sketches with a specified distance. For eg. Sketch entities like spline, line, etc. You can offset finite lines, arcs, and splines.
- Extrude
- Fillet
Front Fender: The front fender is mounted on the front fork and above the front wheel to protect the rider and other parts from debris and foreign particles.
Features Used
- Sketch

- Revolve: It helps to revolve the created sketch with one or more profiles with a center axis about the center axis or an edge used as a center axis.
- Dynamic Mirror: It is used as we sketch entities and mirror them with the pre-sketched entities.
- Split
Rear Fender: It is used the same as the front fender, but it is mounted on the chassis and rear wheel.

Trim Entities: We can make, save, edit, and insert the blocks of created sketches which we use often, such as title blocks, labels, and position. It can attach to geometry or drawing view and inserted in sheet.
To Make Blocks:
- Create Sketch
- Click on Make Block (tool<Block<Make Block)
- Select the Sketch we want to make a block
- Save the block
- Repeat 2-4 times for another block
- With the sketch in edit mode, add necessary relations.
- Finally, Save the part.
Pattern: This tool allows us to create patterns along a planar and 3D Curve. We can base our pattern on open or closed curves such as circles. In the Chain Part, we use Curve driven pattern.
Oil Tank: Oil Tank is used to store the oil required to run the Engine. An oil tank of 3mm thickness is created by our chopper.

Pedal: This is an external component attached to the chassis to provide comfort to the rider to place the leg on the pedal
Features Used:
- Sketch
- Extrude
- Fillet
- Linear Pattern: Same as a circular pattern, but patterns linearly.
- Dome
- Chamfer: Cut or edge of something that makes it sloppy rather than straight cut
Front Wheel: Front Wheel consists of two parts first part is the rim a circular block made of steel/alloy material, and the tire was mounted on the rim made of rubber.
Features Used:
- Sketch
- Revolve
- Trim
- Fillet Sketch
- Boss Extrude
- Revolve Cut
- Linear Pattern
- Chamfer
- Extrude Cut
- Circular Pattern: This Feature help to create a pattern of spokes and the pattern of groves available in the tire. It is also used to create holes in the discs of the front wheel.
Rear Wheel: A circular object that revolves on an axis and is fixed below a vehicle or other enabling it to move easily over the ground. The disc and sprocket are attached to the rear wheel. The chain is connected between the engine and the rear wheel.
Features Used:
- Sketch
- Revolve
- Trim
- Sketch Fillet
- Extrude Boss
- Planes
- Revolve Cut
- Linear Pattern

Front Fork: The fork is a large hydraulic shock absorber with internal coil springs. They allow the front wheel to react to imperfections in the road while isolating the rest of the motorcycle from that motion.
Features Used
- Sketch
- Extrude
- Trim
- Revolve
- Split
- Move/Copy Bodies: This Feature is used to move and copy the body from one place to another place.
- Dome
- Mirror: By using mirror faces with a midplane selected only the chosen faces within the revolve will be mirrored. It can be used in single or multi-body parts and allows us to select solid geometry instead of the features and faces in the body.
- Combine
- Projected Curve: It is the 3D Curve projected from two different 2D Sketch curves.
- Sweep: With Sweep Feature we can create a shape by moving a 2D Sketch profile along a 2D or 3D Sketch path.
Chassis: A Chassis or a frame forms its skeleton. All the components of a motorcycle like suspension, wheels, fuel tank, seats, handlebars, etc. and attached to the base structure which lends a motorcycle its strength and ability to handle well. It is a nonbearing framework that supports the object in its construction and function.
Features Used:

Assembly of the Chopper:
- Initially Chassis component is open in the assembly by an insert component. After Chassis is opened click ok to fix the chassis
- After those other components of the chopper are inserted into the assembly and given a possible mate condition
Features Used:

- Mates: Mates Create Geometric Relationship between the Assembly Components. As we give direction to the linear and rotation motion of the components by adding mates. We can add components within its degree of freedom, visualizing the assembly behavior.
Rendering:
- Rendering is the process of creating realistic images of the photorealistic model with the environment.
- Rendering can be done in two ways in SolidWorks
- Photoview360
- SolidWorks Visualize
In the photorealistic model, some of the mate conditions and positions are changed to render realistic models. Then, the photorealistic model is rendered into realistic images with different views.
Photoview360: Photoview360 is a visualization and rendering solution integrated into SolidWorks. Providing a highly interactive environment for viewing designs as well as for creating photo-realistic rendering can be used to showcase our designs as well.
SolidWorks Visualize: SolidWorks Visualize Provides a suite of stand-alone software tools that combine industry-leading rendering capabilities with visual design-oriented features and workflows, allowing easy and fast creation of visual content that communicates a design vision, passion, and creation.
Conclusion:
- Parts of the Chopper are modeled.
- The parts are inserted into the assembly environment and the chopper was assembled.
- The realistic image was rendered with the use of Photoview360and SolidWorks Visualize.
