Underbody Coating

Under body coating

Underbody coating is usually a dense cladding (often based on rubber) applied uniformly to the undercarriage of the automobile.

The main purpose of undercoating is to prevent rust especially in the body components like frame rails along with other exposed metal parts. Underbody coating can also reduce wear and tear.

Types of Underbody coating

  1. Rubberized underbody coating:

It is the commonly used underbody coating method for automobiles. It protects the underbody from scratches and moisture. Applying this to the undercarriage is a simple spraying process.

  1. Wax Based underbody coating:

It is an ephemeral coating which will withstand only few months. It protects only from the moisture up to certain time period. It is most affordable one.

  1. Asphalt Based underbody coating

This type of coating is best suited for large commercial vehicles and it will provide a greater degree of protection compared to rubber-based costing. It contains little amount of rubber for sound insulation purpose.

  1. Polyurethane underbody coating

This coating closes up splits and fractures on the underbody of the vehicle. It offers good protection against corrosion and also bonds with the metal. It can be paint over the polyurethane coating.

Advantages:

  • Prevents Rusting: it prevents from rusting for 3 to 5 years based on which coating type we choose.
  • Minimizes Sound: It minimizes the sound from underneath the car resulting a noiseless, smooth driving experience up to certain extend.
  • Anti-chipping property: If any stone hits the coating it does not get chipped away hence protects the underbody from exposure to water.

Disadvantages

  • For a new vehicle underbody coating is not much needed one, so it is an unwanted cost.
  • Applying underbody coating will not have any effect to the already corroded part.
