Underbody Coating

UNDERBOBY COATING

Underbody provides long term protection from corrosion to car's underbody. It also protects parts like internal body panels, frame rails and other inner cavities that are not physically accessible but are prone to corrosion.

It is used to prevent the car bodies from rust and corrosion. It also protects from dust and moist regions such as improper road areas, off roads, muddy water in rainy seasons, these are like which damages the bottom area of cars and other vehicles. The underbody coating is generally applied by using sprays and paints in the automobile garages.

Types of Underbody coating:-

1. Rubberized Underbody coating:-

The Rubberized underbody coating is easy to apply and it preserves the underbody well, protecting it from scratches. It is also safe to use on wheel wells and quarter panels to have a soft rubbery finish which prevents from rust and moisture.

2. Polyurethane Underbody coating:-

This polyurethane underbody coating closes up splits and fractures on the underbody of the vehicle. It offers up good protection against corrosion and also bonds with the metal.

3. Wax Underbody coating:-

The wax underbody coating is cheap and very quick option for protection of the undercarriage to the vehicles. It is applicable for the secondary treatment of all protecting coatings. It is also applicable for repairing the coating of all underbodies after an accident.

4. Asphalt Based Automotive Undercoating:-

The Asphalt based undercoating which has better benefits over wax based undercoating. This undercoat will stick well to most of any surfaces and do a great job sealing out moisture and muddy roads. It is less expensive and protects up to 5 years and dries to a firm to hard coating.

Benefits of Underbody coating:-

  • Fights rust

It plays an important role in keeping corrosion at bay. Underbody coating can come in handy especially if you live near the sea, where there is too much humidity, and rusting is just one of those everyday things. You should also seriously consider undercoating if you reside in a place where it snows in winter.

  • Absorbs noise

Very thick undercoating can soften the noises that reach the cabin. Since the undercoating is often made up of rubber it absorbs some of the rackets. The occupants of the car could spare themselves of the road noises – at least up to certain extend.

  • Reinforcement

Underbody coating will offer additional reinforcement, protecting the underbody from water, road debris, gravel and small pebbles. There would also be a lesser chance for the factory coat to flake away.

  • Prolong car’s life

Good undercoating not only defends the underbody from corrosion but also protects the engine and transmission as well! Less rusting coupled with slower wear and tear can surely add years to the lifespan of your vehicle. There would be fewer dents, dings and scratches on the undercarriage for you to fret about.

Disadvantages of Underbody coating:-

  • Expensive

Undercoating works best for new cars. It can be pretty costly.

  • Difficult task

Cars that have been used are already susceptible to road damage and rust will have already begun to set in. It is important to mention that undercoating will unfortunately not protect the car from damage that has already occurred, however it can stop any further damage from manifesting.

  • It adds weight to the vehicle

The amount of weight added to a vehicle with an undercoating is minimal (between 10 to 20 pounds for most vehicles), there is a small element of fuel economy to consider. When your vehicle weighs more, the distance you can travel on a single tank of fuel is reduced.
