BODY OF CONTENT

Centrifugal pump

Centrifugal pumps are used to transport fluids by the conversion of rotational kinetic energy to the hydrodynamic energy of the fluid flow. The rotational energy typically comes from an engine or electric motor. They are a sub-class of dynamic axisymmetric work-absorbing turbomachinery. The fluid enters the pump impeller along or near to the rotating axis and is accelerated by the impeller, flowing radially outward into a diffuser or volute chamber (casing), from which it exits.

Common uses include water, sewage, agriculture, petroleum and petrochemical pumping. Centrifugal pumps are often chosen for their high flow rate capabilities, abrasive solution compatibility, mixing potential, as well as their relatively simple engineering. A centrifugal fan is commonly used to implement a vacuum cleaner. The reverse function of the centrifugal pump is a water turbine converting potential energy of water pressure into mechanical rotational energy

It contains impeller which is inside the casing. The only moving part in the pump is impeller which rotates to create a vacuum near the inlet side to suck the fluid.

Mass flow rate is the rate of mass leaving from the sysem.

Pressure ratio is the ratio of outlet pressure to inlet pressure.

STEPS OF DESIGNING

Before starting of drawing make sure that the unit is in meter

1. First make the sketch of the impeller in which there is one blade.

By the help of help of circular sketch pattern, we can increase the number of blades.

At last extrude the sketch with 0.01m.

2. After that we need to make casing inside which impeller is placed. Which is having both inlet and outlet place as shown in the figure.

After that go to shell option in order to make it hollow.

3.At last enclose the impeller in order to study the flow simulation.

STEPS OF FLOW SIMULATION

Before starting flow simulation first enable the flow simulation from the solidworks add ins

  1. Go to the WIZARD option to start a flow simulation. After that one dialog box will appear. Write project name which you want to give the name to it. After that click on next.
  1. When you hit the next button it asks to set the unit system. For my project i used as SI unit. After that click on next button.
  1. After click on next it will ask to define the flow type whether it is external or Internal. My aim is to study inside the centrifugal pump so I used internal.

There are several additional features also present like gravity, time dependent etc select the option if required in study. After that hit next button.

I have used time rotation option as mentioned in the figure.

  1. After that select the fluid which you want to take in your study and click on add button in order to add the fluid. Here I have used water as a fluid.
  1. After that choose roughness of the wall if it has otherwise click on next.
  1. After that provide essential details like velocity and click finish button. Here I am not taken any velocity.
  1. After that your design will be enclosed in the chamber which is our domain of interest as shown in figure below.
  1. Right click on rotating region and select the insert rotating option.

After that select the surface and provide the parameter.

  1. Now provide boundary condition.

For inlet select Lid 1 and provide environment pressure at inlet.

For outlet select Lid 2 and provide outlet velocity of 10 m/s at outlet.

  1. To study the flow analysis we need to select the quantity which we need to study.

In order to study the quantity, we need to right click on goal and select insert surface goals after that select the quantity which you want to study.

Here my aim is to study average total pressure and mass flow rate.

  1. Now go to mess option and provide mess size according to your design.

Check the advanced channel refinement.

  1. click on Run option to complete the flow simulation.
  1. After that solver will open and it will start calculating the flow simulation.

14. Now go to the cut plot from the results. Here the cut plot

PLOT FOR DIFFERENT PARAMETER

  1. Average Total Pressure at outlet

  1. Mass flow rate at outlet

  1. Pressure ratio vs Mass flow rate

CONCLUSION

  1. As the purpose of pump is to increase the pressure at outlet point. From the plot it is clear that when the velocity is low the pressure is high.
  2. When we increase the outlet velocity there will be drop in pressure at outlet.
  3. The relation between mass flow rate and pressure for ideal case is parabolic. But as we have used random dimension of the centrifugal pump that is why it is not completely look like parabolic but it is somewhat similar to parabolic.
  1. The mass flow rate is increases as we increase the velocity. But in the plot the mass flow rate is negative so it is decreasing linearly. Mass is leaving from the pump so the values are in negative.
  2. Average outlet pressure also decreases when we increase the velocity at outlet.
