Project

TO STUDY A FLOW SIMULATION OF THE FLOW INSIDE THE PIPE USING SOLIDWORKS

AIM

To run a pipe flow simulation with an inlet Reynolds number of 100,1000 and 10000.

Place a line probes at 95%, 90% and 85% of the pipe length to compare the velocity for different Reynolds number.

FORMULA USED

Reynolds number,

`Re = (ρ V L)/µ = (V L)/ⱴ`

Re = Reynolds number

ρ= density of the fluid

V = Velocity of the fluid

L = Characteristic length

µ= dynamic viscosity of the fluid

ⱴ= kinematic viscosity of the fluid

CONDITION

  1. Outlet condition assumed to be an air at atmospheric pressure i.e. 101325Pa, 293.2K.
  2. Inlet condition is different for different Reynolds no.
  3. Wall is assumed to be real.

BODY OF CONTENT

Introduction

Pipe flow, a branch of hydraulics and fluid mechanics, is a type of liquid flow within a closed conduit (conduit in the sense of a means of containment). The other type of flow within a conduit is open channel flow.

There are different types of flow according to Reynolds number

CALCULATION

The behavior of air is different for different temperature. So, I have assumed that the air is to be at Atmospheric pressure. And the temperature is 25 degree Celsius. Corresponding to 25 degree Celsius the physical properties are given in the figure below.

Case 1. When Reynolds no. is 100

`Re = (V L)/ⱴ`

`100 = (V * 0.5)/(1.56 * 10^-5)`

V = 0.00312 m/s

Case 2. When Reynolds no. is 1000

`Re = (V L)/ⱴ`

`1000 = (V * 0.5)/(1.56 * 10^-5)`

V = 0.0312 m/s

Case 3. When Reynolds no. is 10000

`Re = (V L)/ⱴ`

`10000 = (V * 0.5)/(1.56 * 10^-5)`

V = 0.312 m/s

STEPS FOR DESIGNING PIPE

Before starting design make sure that the unit is metre

  1. First select the front plane for sketch after that draw the circle of dimension as shown in the figure
  1. Extrude the design with 0.5 m of length as shown in the figure
  1. In order to make it hollow select both the end faces of the cylinder and go to the shell option in feature menu and provide a thickness of 0.001m as shown in the figure
  1. Now in order to make a line probe select the right plane and go to sketch option to make a vertical line over the pipe which is at a distance of 85% of the length.
  1. In similar way do for 90% and 95% of the length to complete the design.

STEPS FOR FLOW SIMULATION

Before starting flow simulation first enable the flow simulation from the solidworks add ins

  1. Go to the flow simulation and provide the lid at both the end in order to make the design air tight. Lid is present at the top of the flow simulation menu.
  1. After that go to the WIZARD option to start a flow simulation. After that one dialog box will appear. Write project name which you want to give the name to it. After that click on next.
  1. when you hit the next button it asks to set the unit system. For my project i used as SI unit. After that click on next button.
  1. after click on next it will ask to define the flow type whether it is external or Internal. My aim is to study inside the pipe so I used internal.

There are several addition features also present like gravity, time dependent etc select the option if required in study. After that hit next button.

  1. After that select the fluid which you want to take In your study and click on add button in order to add the fluid.
  1. after that choose roughness of the wall if it has otherwise click on next. After that provide essential details like velocity if any otherwise click finish button
  2. Click on boundary option to insert the boundary condition. Here I am giving 3 type of boundary i.e. inlet, outlet, and wall boundary.
  1. After that right click on the mesh to edit the mesh according to your design
  1. Now click on result option after that right click on cut plot and choose the area from where you want to cut the plot to study.
  1. Right click on XY plot and select the probe line where the main focus of study is.

Similarly do for other probes like here I am using 85%, 90%, 95% and between 85% to 90%, between 90% to 95%, between 85% to 95% as shown in the figure.

After that click on run button in order to do the simulation

  1. The result will be stored in the XY plot and the cut plot

STEPS FOR PARAMETRIC STUDY

  1. Right click on project and select new parametric study
  1. After that provide input parameter in dialog box which is appeared in the downward side. Here I have taken velocity as input parameter
  1. Go to output parameter and select the output parameter as shown in the figure
  1. click on scenario where you provide the various data by changing the data for different data set. As shown in the figure. After that click on Run button which is present in the parametric study.
  1. After that you will get the result for different velocities.

RESULTS

Cut Plot for Different Cases

Case 1. When Reynolds no. is 100

Case 2. When Reynolds no. is 1000

Case 3. When Reynolds no. is 10000

Plot of different Reynolds no. at the probe

Probe 1. Present at 85% of the length

Probe 2. Present at 90% of the length

Case A. between 85% and 90% probe the plot is

Case B. between 90% and 95% probe the plot is

Case C. between 85% and 95% probe the plot is

CONCLUSION

  1. For different Reynolds no. whether 100,1000,1000 the Maximum velocity obtain are 0.00619 m/s, 0.0619 m/s, 0.619 m/s.
  2. The maximum velocity obtain near the centre of the pipe.
  3. The curve obtain for each of the plot follow parabolic features.
  4. The curve obtain after comparison of two probe gives the maximum velocity at the centre of the pipe.
