To calculate dead and live load for industrial steel structures and to apply them using TSD

1.To calculate the dead load based on IS code and apply it to the model, you can follow these steps:

  1. Determine the unit weight of materials: The first step is to determine the unit weight of the materials that will make up the dead load. As per IS code, the unit weight of finishes is 20 kN/m3, slab is 25 kN/m3, brick masonry is 19 kN/m3, and roofing load based on purlin size is 0.75 kN/m2.

  2. Calculate the dead load for each component: Once you have determined the unit weight of each material, you can calculate the dead load for each component. For example, for finishes of 50mm, the dead load would be:

Dead load = unit weight x thickness = 20 kN/m3 x 0.05 m = 1 kN/m2

Similarly, for a 150mm thick brick wall, the dead load would be:

Dead load = unit weight x thickness = 19 kN/m3 x 0.15 m = 2.85 kN/m2

For a ceiling loading of 0.3 kN/m2, the dead load would be:

Dead load = 0.3 kN/m2

  1. Add up the dead load for all components: Once you have calculated the dead load for each component, you can add them up to get the total dead load for the structure.

  2. Apply the dead load on the model: You can apply the dead load on the model by assigning the appropriate dead load values to each component. Use a 3D modeling software to accurately apply the dead load on the model.

2.To calculate the live load based on IS code and apply it to the model, you can follow these steps:

  1. Determine the type of occupancy: The first step is to determine the type of occupancy and the corresponding live load as per IS 875. For example, for a residential building, the live load is 2 kN/m2, while for an office building, the live load is 3 kN/m2.

  2. Calculate the live load for each component: Once you have determined the live load, you can calculate the live load for each component. For example, for roof loading, the live load would be:

Live load = roof loading x live load factor

The live load factor for roof loading is 1.5 as per IS 875.

Similarly, for equipment loading of 5 kN/m2, the live load would be:

Live load = 5 kN/m2

  1. Add up the live load for all components: Once you have calculated the live load for each component, you can add them up to get the total live load for the structure.

  2. Apply the live load on the model: You can apply the live load on the model by assigning the appropriate live load values to each component. Use a 3D modeling software to accurately apply the live load on the model.

3.To calculate the loading of a 5T crane based on the given inputs, you can follow these steps:

  1. Determine the weight of the crane: The weight of the crane is the weight of the crab plus the weight of the hoist and other structural components. For the purpose of this calculation, let's assume a total weight of 10,000 kg or 100 kN.

  2. Determine the load per wheel: The load per wheel can be calculated by dividing the weight of the crane by the number of wheels. For the given inputs, the load per wheel would be:

Load per wheel = Weight of crane / Number of wheels = 100 kN / 4 = 25 kN

  1. Determine the maximum bending moment: The maximum bending moment on the beam supporting the crane can be calculated by using the following formula:

Maximum bending moment = (Load per wheel x Wheel base^2) / 8 = (25 kN x 2m^2) / 8 = 12.5 kNm

  1. Determine the maximum shear force: The maximum shear force on the beam supporting the crane can be calculated by using the following formula:

Maximum shear force = Load per wheel / 2 = 25 kN / 2 = 12.5 kN

  1. Determine the reaction forces: The reaction forces on the supports of the beam can be calculated by using the following formula:

Reaction force = Load per wheel / 2 + Weight of crab / 2 = 25 kN / 2 + 40 kN / 2 = 32.5 kN

  1. Check the maximum allowable stresses: Finally, check if the maximum allowable stresses for the beam material are not exceeded by the calculated maximum bending moment and maximum shear force. If the stresses exceed the allowable limits, the beam design may need to be revised.
