suspension compliance

Questions:

1.If there were no bushings at all in the suspension (all components are hard mounted), would you still have compliance in the system? If yes, where is this coming from?

2.In a front mounted rack setup, if the suspension links are more compliant than the steering, would you have an understeer effect or an oversteer effect?

3.Why does the outer wheel almost always gain positive camber when subjected to a lateral force?

4.Can you get a net oversteer effect out of aligning torque compliance steer? Why or why not? If yes, how? (just a basic explanation)

Answers:

  1. If there were no bushings there would still be compliance in the system because of the elasticity of the suspension links and subframe.
  2. In front mounted rack setup, if suspension links are more compliant than the steering system, it results in understeer effectas the suspension links would give in easily than the steering rack because of which the loaded wheel toes out during turns.
  3. The lateral Force always acts at the ground below all the suspension components. Due to this, the lateral Force causes the top of of the outer wheel to tilt away from the turn.Hence, lateral Force always causes the outer wheel to gain positive camber.
  4. No. It is not possible to get a net oversteer effect from alligning torque compliance steer.

Reason:

Alligning torque results in understeer effect on front axle and oversteer effect on rear axle as it tries to straighten out the wheels.

As front wheels deflect more than the rear wheels during turns, alligning torque will always be greater on front axle compared to that on rear axle.

Therefore, understeer effect on front axle is greater than oversteer effect on rear axle as a result of which we get a net understeer effect.
