Structural analysis of a buidling using Robot Structural Analysis

Q1) What are HVAC systems? Why are they essential in the modeling of buildings?

ANS:

HVAC systems represent Heating, Ventilating and Air Conditioning

• HVAC systems are, everything from air conditioner at home to the large systems used in industrial buildings and apartment blocks.

  • A good HVAC system means, they give thermal control and indoor comfort, and is meant using the principles of thermodynamics, hydraulics, and transfer of heat transfer.

• The big air conditioner boxes that we see on top of apartment blocks or offices are examples of HVAC systems.

  • They're typically placed in large industrial buildings skyscrapers, apartment blocks, and large interior environments.
  • They're obviously essential components of environment where there are health regulations like temperature and humidity be kept at certain levels, using air taken from outside.

• But heating and cooling systems we use in our home are also HVAC systems.

  • They may come under different form, but many of the fundamental principles determine how they operate, as well as their efficiency, crosses over from the smallest of personal devices right through to the biggest commercial installations.

• The appropriate application of Heating, Ventilation, and Air-conditioning (HVAC) systems is key to improve the energy efficiency of buildings.

  • Significant advances have been made in the past decades on model development to provide better control over the energy consumption of system components to ensure a satisfactory interior environment in regard of thermal comfort and indoor air quality.
  • Yet it is a challenge to select and implement the best-suited modeling technique for improving the control strategy of HVAC systems.

• HVAC systems not only control overall climate in the building, but also improve the air quality.

• They also make adjustments based on the outside temperature.

RESULT:

Q3) Use the add-ins tab to load plug-ins for robot structural analysis to your Revit software

ANS:

Open revit,we can see shopping cart icon on top right side which is an autodesk app store, click on it.

Now type structural analysis toolkit in search tab to search. choose the required version and install the file.

Then robot structural analysis will be installed.

Otherwise we can get this produect through website.

we have to sign in and search for robot structural analysis product and click to install it with required version.

Q4) Why do we need to assess buildings/analyze while modeling elements? Does design affect modeling in anyways?

ANS:

A structure refers to a body or system of connected parts which support a load. structural analysis is the determination of the effects of loads on physical structures and their components.

Structures subject to this type of analysis include all that must withstand loads, such as buildings, bridges, aircraft and ships.

Structural analysis employs the fields of applied mechanics, material science and applied mathematics to compute a structure's deformations, internal forces, stresses support reactions, accelerations, and stability.

The results of the analysis are used to verify a structure's fitness for use, often precluding physical tests. Structural analysis is thus a key part of the engineering design of structures.

Modelling involves many other factors which are important for a building to withstand gravitational loads are sensibly vulnerable if subjected to extraordinary factors such as earthquakes, exhibiting cracks even for events of moderate intensity compared to other structural typologies like as concrete or steel buildings.

Designers need to compare a lot of different drawings to ensure everything matches up. even the smallest of inconsistencies may damage the project.

One missed piece of information may not show up at the design stage. however it will certainly have an effect when you come to build your structure. we have to do modelling as per the design. so design definitely affects modelling.

Q5) From the structural model developed in week 6 and 7, export the complete analytical model to robot structural analysis.
a. List your assumptions on what boundary conditions will be realistic for the analysis approach
b. Use the design standards to decide what loads must be applied to floorings based on the type of structure decided
c. List the load combinations and include them in the analysis model
d. Analyze the building and report the following results
i. Maximum Moment in each floor for all Load Combinations
ii. Maximum Displacement in each floor for all Load combinations
iii. Lateral Displacement in building for all Lateral Load combinations
e. After analysis, do you think you have a better approach or idea in modeling structural members?

ANS:

a) Assumptions:

• A place where either the external force or the displacements are known at the beginning of analysis is boundary condition.

• To solve any structural analysis problem, every location on the boundary of a structure must have either known force or known displacement.

• The known force or the known displacement may have some magnitude or it may be zero

• Boundary conditions are expressed in terms of applicable degrees of freedom.

• The most common displacement boundary conditions in structural analysis are those that restrain the movement of the structure in one or more degrees of freedom at a point.

b) Loads which must be applied to floorings :

i. Dead load

ii. Live load

iii. Earthquake load

c) Load combinations:

  • 1.5 DL 1.5 LL
  • 1DL +-1.5 LL

AIM: To include load combinations to the model

TOOLS USED:

• Manage

• Structural settings

• Analyze

• Boundary condition

• Type of load

PROCEDURE:

STEP: 1

  • First we need to open the structural model.
  • Next go to manage tool
  • open structural setting

STEP: 2

  • then, we need to add boundary conditions to the analytical madel
  • then apply the load to the analytical model using the load option in the analize toolbar

Due to some issues i was not able to install STRUCTURAL ANALYSIS TOOL KIT

but the procedure is written below, and i have got the basic idea behind the process.

STEP: 3

  • Next, we have to export the complete analytical model to the robot structure analysis
  • using robot structural analysis option in the analyze toolbar

STEP: 4

  • after selecting the robot structural analysis option
  • the new tab will be iible
  • click on OK

Q6) What is energy analysis and why do we need to consider it while modeling in Revit?

How does the factor of sustainability improve the quality of your design?

ANS:

Energy analysis can provide information on the amount of energy input/output of a system. It is a common tool to investigate a system's performance and can be used to evaluate energy/fuel use and energy efficiency.

Energy simulation can help us to analyze the movement of energy in and out through the rooms and volumes in a building model. This information can help designers to make better informed, cost-effective decisions which improve the performance and reduce the environmental impact of buildings.

Use the simulation results to understand building energy use. Then iterate the designs to improve their sustainability ratings. The energy model created from the Revit building model can be displayed in Revit, so you can view and validate the energy model used for analysis.

The energy model can also be exported to third-party applications for further analysis in a variety of common formats: gbXML, DOE2, and EnergyPlus.

Sustainable design deals with the philosophy of having built and designed objects, buildings, environments and services that conforms with the many principles of ecological sustainability.

This includes maintaining change in a homeostatic environment where the use of resources, inclination of investments, and the direction of development are balanced and meet the current and future needs of humanity.

Simply put, sustainable design represents development that not only meets the needs of the present but does so without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs.

Ways to approach sustainable design include utilizing sustainable chemical engineering, responsible resource management, and holistic environmental protection.

Sustainable design and building practices not only reduce the negative effects on the environment but they also provide benefits with regard to economics, productivity and enhanced public relation.

Environmentally sustainable buildings also have significant operational cost saving reducing energy required to heat and cool the building, more efficient lighting systems and optimize the economic performance.

Considering a sustainable design philosophy encourages decisions at each phase of the design process that will reduce negative impacts on the environment and the health of the occupants, without compromising the bottom line.
