Static Analysis of a plate with holes in Solidworks
Aim: The goal of the analysis is to understand the stress, strain, and displacement when a plat with a set number of through-holes is subjected to load.
Introduction:
We are provided with 2 plates with different hole geometries to analyze for stress, strain, and displacement. The plates will be subjected to equal tension load and results will be displayed for the aforementioned 3 cases.
Loads and Fixed Geometry:
Beam type: Cantilever beam.
Load: 1000 N tensile
Material: Alloy Steel
- Geometry 1:
Parameter Min Max Stress (x 10^4 Nm-2) 3.794 119 Strain (x 10^-6 ) 0.271 4.188 Displacement (x 10^-3 mm) 0 0.523 - Geometry 2:
Parameter Min Max Stress (x 10^4 Nm-2) 1.22 113.3 Strain (x 10^-6 ) 0.045 4.013 Displacement (x 10^-3 mm) 0 0.566
Result:
As we can see, the stress is higher in the first case with a single hole. The increased holes in the 2nd plate have relieved some of the stresses, allowing for a slightly lower Max stress value.
However, this has lead to increased max deflection. Strain values are very close in both cases.
In conclusion, either plate can be used, but if the priority is to minimize stress as much as possible, the second geometry with more holes is favorable.
