Project

Starting with Flow Simulsation

AIM : To perform flow simulation in a pipe with different Reynolds numbers.

OBJECTIVE OF THE PROJECT:

Our main objective is to run a pipe simulation with Reynolds numbers 100 , 1000 and 10,000 also:

1. To place line probes at 95%, 90% and 85% of the pipe length.

2. To compare the normalized velocity profile at each of these locations.

3. To normalize the velocity profile by the inlet velocity.

ABOUT FLUID FLOW SIMULATION :

. Fluid flow simulation allows to look at the behavior of fluids, which is a must for many industries. In such industries, a large number of products must be cast so it is important to know how the molten material will behave. Therefore to reduce the defects and time, virtual design is made and analysed before making it in a reality.

REYNOLDS NUMBER:

The Reynolds number is an dimensionless quantity in fluid mechanics used to help predict flow patterns in different fluid flow situations. At low Reynolds numbers, flows tend to be dominated by laminar (sheet-like) flow, while at high Reynolds numbers turbulence results from differences in the fluid's speed and direction, which may sometimes intersect or even move counter to the overall direction of the flow.

Reynolds number is the ratio of intertial force to the viscous force.

`Re = (rhoVD)/(mu)`

Where,

ρ = fluid density in kg/m^3`.

V = Velocity of the fluid in m/s.

D = Diameter of the pipe in meters.

μ = Viscosity of the fluid in Pa-s.

PROCEDURE FOR THIS PROJECT:

  1. Creating a pipe which is opened from both ends.
  2. providing probes at 85%, 90% and 95% of the length.
  3. Using flow simulation, creating lids at both the ends.
  4. Creating it in a new project.
  5. Providing global mesh for the geometry.
  6. Inserting boundary condition. For face 1, providing inlet velocity. For face 2, providing static pressure. For the shell surface, providing a real wall to it.
  7. Inserting the xy plot ( for velocity) at different probes.
  8. Inserting cut plot at the inlet face.
  9. Starting new parameteric studies.
  10. Selecting input and output variables.
  11. Using thee design points with different mesh size in x y and z direction for the scenario.
  12. Now hitting the run button to solve the problem.
