Simulation of FTP drive cycle for an EV using ADVISOR Tool with MATLAB.
Aim: To simulate the FTP drive cycle for an EV using ADVISOR Tool.
Objective:
Using ADVISOR tool, we have to simulate the following
1. For EV_defaults_in file, if cargo mass is 500 kg with all other default conditions, can the vehicle travel for 45 km with the FTP drive cycle? Conclude your observations.
2. In the above case, try changing the battery capacity and repeat the simulation.
3. Perform gradeability test with PRIUS_Jpn_defaults_in file
Compare your results in the table and conclude.
Theory:
NREL's Advanced Vehicle Simulator, ADVISOR, was first developed in November 1994. It was designed as an analysis tool to assist the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) in developing and understanding hybrid electric vehicles (HEVs) through the Hybrid Vehicle Propulsion System contracts with Ford, GM, and Chrysler. As the tool became more advanced and flexible, it has also been used by many other clients to understand the system-level interactions of hybrid and electric vehicle components.
Procedure:
- First download the ADVISOR tool software from https://sourceforge.net/projects/adv-vehicle-sim/
- Now extract the downloaded file.
- Open the tool using MATLAB, by making the tool folder as the default folder.
- Now load the "advisor.m" file and run the program.
- It will open the ADVISOR Tool or type advisor in the command window and the ADVISOR Tool will open.
1) For EV_defaults_in file, if cargo mass is 500 kg with all other default conditions, can the vehicle travel for 45 km with FTP drive cycle?
- Select the metric unit and click on start.
- Change the load file to 'EV_defaults_in'
- Change the cargo mass to 500 and click on continue
- Now change the drive cycle to 'CYC_FTP' and # of cycles to 3, click on RUN
Observation:
- We observe that vehicle can't travel 45 km.
- So, to travel 45 km with the FTP cycle we will have to change the battery capacity or any other variable parameters.
2) In the above case, by changing the battery capacity and repeating the simulation.
Case 1: By increasing the battery capacity to 50 V
we get,
Case 2: By decreasing the battery capacity to 15 V
we get,
Observation:
- We can observe that when the battery capacity was increased the travel distance increased to 53.3 km and decreased to 24.8 km when battery capacity is changed to 15 with the FTP drive cycle.
3) Perform gradeability test with PRIUS_Jpn_defaults_in file
- Change the load file to 'PRIUS_JPN_defaults_in' and click on continue
- Now select the drive cycle as 'CYC_FTP' and # of cycles as 3
- Also, select Gradeability test and click on Gradeability options
- In Gradeability options select 'All Systems Enabled' and click on OK.
- In Gradeability options, we change the Speed and Duration to find Gradeability %.
- Now click on RUN
Case 1: When Speed = 10 mph ,and Duration = 50 sec
Case 2: When Speed = 20 mph ,and Duration = 50 sec
Case 3: When Speed = 30 mph ,and Duration = 50 sec
Case 4: When Speed = 40 mph ,and Duration = 50 sec
Case 5: When Speed = 50 mph ,and Duration = 50 sec
Table:
| S.No. | Speed (mph) | Speed (kmph) | Duration (seconds) | Gradeability (%) |
| 1. | 10 | 16.1 | 50 | 34.4 |
| 2. | 20 | 32.2 | 50 | 23.5 |
| 3. | 30 | 48.3 | 50 | 18.8 |
| 4. | 40 | 64.4 | 50 | 15.8 |
| 5. | 50 | 80.5 | 50 | 13.6 |
Observation:
- We can observe that Gradeability decreases with increases in Speed with constant Duration
- We can also observe that highest Gradeability of 34.4% is at 10 mph
Conclusion:
Thus, we have successfully simulated the objectives using ADVISOR Tool with MATLAB.
