Section Modulus calculation and optimization

SECTION MODULUS CALCULATION AND OPTIMIZATION

Aim

To calculate the section modulus of the previously designed hood for analyzing its strength and also optimizing the design to see the difference in the bending strength of the hood.

Section Mondulus

Section modulus is an important parameter in structural engineering. It is defined as the ratio of the stress applied to the member divided by the strain resulting from the application of that stress. In simple terms, the section modulus can be thought of as the amount of force needed to cause a certain amount of deformation (strain) in a beam. For example, if we apply a load of 100 N to a beam, then the strain would be 0.1 mm/mm 1 mm. If the section modulus was 10 MPa, then the stress would be 100 N / 10 MPa 10 kN/mm2.

S=I/Y

S= Section modulus

I= Moment of inertia (unit mm4)

Y= Distancefrom neutral axis to extreme end (unit mm)

The unit of a 'section modulus' is (mm3)

Hood Design optimization

Here,

Moment of inertia(max) = 8.281x10^5[mm^4]

Moment of inertia(min) = 3.6824x10^3[mm^4]

Y = 482.8288 mm

S=I/Y

S=3.6824x10^3/482.8288= 7.6267mm^3

Conclution

so, here the moment of inertia can be seen by the change in the design.
