Section Modulus calculation and optimization
SECTION MODULUS
It is the ratio of moment of intertia and the distance of the topmost or the bottommost fiber from the neutral axis.
S=I/Y
S= Section modulus
I= Moment of inertia
Y= Distance between the netural axis and the extreme end of the object.
Example:
A sectio of a car hood to check its section modulus.
Case-01

Section of modulus= I/Y
= 4.8136/486.94
Section of modulus = 9.884x10^-3
Case-02
Increasing the overall distance by 2 mm

Section of modulus = I/Y
= 6.4192/490.96
Section of modulus = 13.074x10^-3
As we see Section of modulus is high in case-02, because as you increase the overall distance the moment of inetia also increases.
