Section Modulus calculation and optimization

Optimization of Section Modulus of the Hood

Objective: In this project, the hood designed earlier is taken into consideration and the section modulus of the Assembly is calculated. Changes are made to improve the strength of the hood to ensure an increase in durability.

Introduction:

For any automotive part, to ensure its physical properties, various tests are conducted such as the torsional, tensional, shear, polar moment of inertia, moment of inertia, etc. A section modulus is also a property that helps us understand the durability and the capacity of the part.

Calculations and Procedure:

To calculate the section modulus of the hood, the following formula is used:

S= I/Y

Where I is the moment of inertia and Y is the total distance of the part in O-Y section.

In this assignment, a plane is considered at a particular distance from the Y plane and the sectional analysis is done at that location.

For the sectional modulus to be right, the curve must be closed, so it is closed using the sketch tool. However, the picture below shows, the MOI.

The MOI from the picture above is 1.154932343 x 10^8 mm^4

Whereas, the distance is 485mm. So Y = 242.5mm. So, S= 1.154932343 x 10^8 mm^4 / 242.5mm.I.e 476260.76 mm^3.

To improve the sectional modulus, the distance between the outer panel and the inner panel is increased by 0.75mm.

So the new MOI is 1.21860215 x 10^8 mm^4. Since the value of Y remains the same, S= 1.21860215 x 10^8 mm^4 / 242.5mm. I.e 502516.35 mm^3.

Conclusions:

As the distance between the outer panel and the inner panel is increased, the area increases, and then the sectional modulus is increased. This indicates that the ability to take in stress and the load increases, making it more durable. The task was to increase the sectional modulus or rather optimize it at any region. Required actions were done to do so.
