Section Modulus calculation and optimization

SECTION MODULUS CALCULATION AND OPTIMIZATION.

SECTION MODULUS:

The section modulus is the measure of the strength of a section withstand for an applied amount of load. The section modulus is measured by the following equation.

S= I/Y

where

I: moment of inertia

Y:distance between the neutral axis and the extreme end of the object

The aim of the project is to identify the section modulus of the hood designed and come up with ways to improve the section modulus of the hood.

case 1

here, the moment of inertia is brought up with the section inertia tool in NX.

The minimum moment of inertia is taken into account because, the section starts to break at the minimum and at the maximum it completely fails. so, we account the threshold value.

case 2:

The section have been offsetted, the emboss have been increased inorder to maximize the moment of inertia.

we can either increase the moment of inertia or decrease the Y value. In our case decreasing the Y value is not possible. so we tend to increase the moment of inertia.

OBSERVATION:

factor case 1 case 2

MOI 1.486 1.605
Y 437.8 437.8
S 0.0039 0.00366

We could infer a change in section modulus by increasing the moment of inertia by increasing the size of the embosses.

hence, increasing the strength of the hood further more.
