Section Modulus calculation and optimization

Section Modulus

  • the ratio of area moment of inertia about the neutral axis to the distance of outermost Fiber

S = I/Y, S - Section Modulus,
I - Moment of inertia,
Y - Neutral axis to the outermost fiber

Actual Section modulus of Hood design -

I = 2.9241 * 10^05 mm^4

Y = 440 mm

S = 2.9241 * 10^05 mm^4 / 440 mm \

S = 6.63*10^-8 mm^3

Improved Section modulus by increasing strength of hood -

I = 2.963 X 10 ^ -5 mm^4

Y = 440 mm

S = 2.963 X 10 ^ -5 mm^4 / 440 mm

= 6.73*10^-8 mm^3

By increasing the strength of the hood so that the moment of inertia will be increased as well section modulus also increased.
