Section Modulus calculation and optimization

SECTION MODULUS CALACULATION AND OPTIMIZATION

AIM:

To calculated the section modulus for the give hood model for iteration and analysis which will the better to be considered.

Section modulus :

Section modulus is also referred to as the polar modulus or the torsional sectional modulus it is denoted by Zp.

Section modulus is the geometric property of the given cross-section of any shaft or beam structures. It is the direct measure of the strength of the shaft section or the beam section. Higher the section modulus of a structure, the more the resistive it becomes to bending.

The second moment of area is also known as the moment of inertia of a shape. It is directly related to the area of material in the cross-section and the direction of that area from the centroid. Once the centroid is located the more important structural properties of the shape can be calculated. The axis that determines the centroid is also known as the neutral axis ப்ப்ஹ்ப்

1. Before optimization

We take the hood assembly which we designed and create an intersection curve. We project the inersection curve and close off any gaps. We then use the tool 'Section inertia analysis' to calculate the moment of inertia and then we measure the distance from one end of the section to the other end and divide it by 2 to calculate Y.

Section inertia analysis :

Section inertia analysis value as created .

Section inertia analysis :

In this section inertia analysis selected the sketch

MOI (Max) ; 7.2917

MOI (Min) : 2.00141

S = Section Modulus

I = Moment of Inertia

y = distance between the neutral axis and the extreme end of the object

Hood ymax = 879.7

Hood ymin = 879.7/2 = 439

Moment of inertia Imax = 7.291757755x10^8

Moment of inertia Imin = 2.001417233x10^6

S= I/Y

S (Section Modulus) = Moment of Inertia / distance from the neutral axis to the outer most fiber

S=2.001417233x10^6/439 = 4559.0

Create the plane in the middle of the hood assembly axis.

Selected the center curve give the on curve plane with the 50%

With the plane reference use the intersection commend to create the hood inner panel sketch

With the same plane create the outer panel intersection sketch

Join the both Outer panel & inner panel sketch together for find out the Section inertia analysis

Second type of exiting Hood assembly

In this Second type Hood assembly only the sketch as modified for the section inertia analysis value can increase

Second Type section inertia analysis

MOI (Max) : 7.5697

MOI (Min) : 2.0801

Hood ymax = 879.7

Hood ymin = 879.7/2 = 439

Moment of inertia Imax = 7.569727038 x10^8

Moment of inertia Imin = 2.080138119 x10^6

S= I/Y

S (Section Modulus) = Moment of Inertia / distance from the neutral axis to the outer most fiber

Z= 2.080138119 x10^6 / 439

Z= 4738.3
