Section Modulus calculation and optimization

Section Modulus:Section modulus is a geometric property of a cross section used in the design of beams or other flexural members that will experience deflection due to an applied bending moment.

Section Modulus of the Designed Hood:

Aim:With the help of various tools in NX-CAD we are going to find the section modulus of the designed hood.

Procuder:

  • first we need to open the file and consider the position of the hood in horizontal.
  • Then create the datum plane at the center of the horizontal hood part.
  • After datum plane cretion we need to use intersection curve so that we will get the curve as shown in the figure.
  • Then we need to use sketch option and then trim the inner curves as shown in the figure.
  • Finally we need to join the open curves with lines,curves and splin etc to close the complete sketch.
  • Then with the help of below formula we need to find the section modulus.

S = I/y

where the I=minimum moment of inertia

y=length ofthe section /2

  • Here section modulus is directly praportional to the moment of inertia.
  • We need to consider the MOI (min)of the design ie:Minimum moment of inertia.

Case 1:

case 2:

CASE Moment of inertia Length of hood Section modulus
1 2.232 874 .0051 N/mm2
2 2.90 874 .0066 N/mm2

Conclusion:

  • Here we have seen that in case 1 the section modulus is less so we have improved the design of hood in case 2

so that it will withstand more stress compared to case 1.

  • We have decreaded the cross section and we have given the extra bends and splin for the design for increasing the strength of hood.
  • By observing the above data the conclusion is by changing the design we can improve the strength of the material.
