Section Modulus calculation and optimization

SECTION MODULUS CALCULATION AND OPTIMIZATION

Aim: To use the Section from the Hood design and calculate the section modulus and to Come up with a new section that has improved the section modulus of the previous section.

Section modulus

Section modulus is a geometric property for a given cross-section used in the design of beams or flexural members. It is defined as the ratio of moment of inertia and the distance between the neutral axis and the extreme end of the object.

S=I/y

where,

S = Section Modulus

I = Moment of Inertia

y = Distance between the neutral axis and the extreme end of the object

Calculation of Section Modulus

Minimum moment of inertia (I) = 6.807x10^(5) mm^(4)

Distance between the neutral axis and the extreme end of the object (y)= 484.791/2 = 242.3955 mm

Therefore, Section modulus (S)= I/y = (6.807x10^(5)) / 242.3955 = 2808.22 mm^(3)

Section Modulus Optimization

To improve the section modulus of the previous section and to increase the strength, I have increased the distance between hood inner panel and outer panel, that is about 0.5mm and calculated the section modulus again.

Calculation of Section Modulus (Improved section)

New minimum moment of inertia (I) = 7.163x10^(5) mm^(4)

The distance between the neutral axis and the extreme end of the object (y) is same as before, that is 242.3955 mm

Therefore, the new improved Section modulus (S)= I/y = (7.163x10^(5)) / 242.3955 = 2955.08 mm^(3)

Therefore the increase in section modulus is 5.2%.
