Section Modulus calculation and optimization
SECTION MODULUS CHALLENGE
Section modulus is an important value that has to be determined to maximum resistance a component can withstand. To perform this, the intersection between parts is analyzed. In this challenge, the cross-section of both the outer and inner panels of a hood is analyzed using a set equation and some values.
S = I / Y
Where: S = section modulus
I = Area moment of inertia
Y = Distance from the neutral axis to the outermost part of the material
INTERSECTION OF INNER AND OUTER HOOD

CASE ONE
I min = 4.322e + 03 mm4
A = 42.80 mm2
Y = 486 mm
S = 4.322e + 03 / 486
= 8.893
CASE TWO
The distance between the inner hood and the outer hood intersection was offset by 5mm and then joined. The analysis was then performed and the values below were plotted.

I min = 6.14e + 03 mm4
A = 41.84 mm2
Y = 486 mm
S = 6.14e + 03 / 486
= 12.63
Distance from the neutral axis to the outermost part of the material
Y = 486mm

CONCLUSION
It was discovered that the moment of inertia increased with the distance between the inner and outer hood. This also increased the stiffness.
