Section Modulus calculation and optimization

Section modulus

Section modulus is a geometric property for a given cross-section used in the design of beams or flexural members.

Also, Section modulus is the direct Measure of Strength of an object. Higher the Section Modulus higher will be the Resistance to Bending.

The formula S=I/Y

S- Section modulus

I-moment of inertia

Y-Distance between the neutral axis and the maximum end of the object

The following are the few Iteration performed over the ENGINE HOOD Cross-section

1.inner and outer panel with 2mm offset as per the actual master section

Here

I(min)=3.102x10^3 mm^4

Y=478.1/2 =239.05mm

S=I/Y=12.97mm^3

2.inner and outer panel with 3mm offset

Here

I(min)=3.40x10^3 mm^4

Y=478.1/2 =239.05mm

S=I/Y=14.22mm^3

Conclusion

When the section modulus increases the moment of resistance also increase, without adding the additional material we can achieve higher resistance of bending by using make an only geometrical change in the object
