Section Modulus calculation and optimization

section module

Section Modulus is the geometric property of the given cross-section of any shaft or beam structures. It is the direct measure of the strength of the shaft section or the beam section. Higher the section modulus of a structure, the more the resistive it becomes to bending.

the section module is generaly calculated for the extreme tensile or compressive fiber in the tensile beem

section module is indicated as follwing

s=I/Y

where i is the moment of inertia and y is the distance from the neutral fiber from top or the bottom of the fiber

Unit of a “section modulus” is in. 3 (mm 3 )

section modulus depends only on the cross section shape of the beam. Cross section shapes like rectangular, square, circular, I section and T, composite section etc. For symmetric sections, the value of “section modulus” is for both above and below of centroid of the fiber.

to improve the strength of the component the inner hood is offseted to 0.7 mm inner side so it provide the better result

TYPES OF SECTION MODULE

There are two types of section modul

- the elastic section modulus (S)

- the plastic section modulus (Z).

elastic modulus

the elastic section modulus is used, applying up to the yield point for most metals and other common materials. it should be used for the materials which behave elastically under loading

plastic section modulus

the Plastic Section Modulus is used for the materials which have plastic behaviers as a dominant character.

section module calculation and optimization

moment of inertia ( MOI ) Imax = 8.101842134 e^5 ( mm^4 )

moment of inertia ( MOI ) Imin = 4.27022e^3(MM)

distance betwwen the neutral axis is = 485.73

section module ( s ) = moment of inertia (MOI) / distance between the neutral axis

s=I/Y

for maximum (MOI)

s = 8.1018e^5 /485.73

=1667.96368352*10^3 MM^3

for minimum ( MOI )

s=4.27022*10^5 / 485.73

=8.79130381*10 ^ 3 MM^3

HOOD OPTIMIZATION METHOD

calculation of optimized hood

moment of inertia ( MOI ) Imax =8.1150*10^5

moment of inertia ( MOI ) Imix =4.030*10^3

the distance between the neutral axis and the external end of the object

S=I/Y

for maximum (Zmax)

s = 8.1150*10^5 / 485.73

=1670.68124226*10^3 MM^3

for minimum (zmin)

s=4.0380*10^3/485.73

=8.31326045*10^3MM^3

CONCLUSION
The section module of the front hood of the car was calculated and compared with optimised hood and the result is given
