Section Modulus calculation and optimization
SECTION MODULUS CALCULATION AND OPTIMIZATION
SECTION MODULUS:
Section modulus is used to find the strength of the part. Basically we use this in order to improve the structural strength of a part or any body.
S= I/y (mm^3)
Where S is the section modulus, I is the moment of inertia and y is the distance from the neutral axis from the extreme end.
In order to increase the structural strength, the moment of inertia need to increase.
Current Section modulus:

calculation:
I = 3.5598*10^3mm^4 , y = 476.477mm ( from calculation ) / 2 = 238.24mm
S = 14.942mm^3
After optimizing the section:
I changed the section by offset the inner hood curve to 1mm in the previous section. By modifying the previous section, the moment of inertia value is changed

calculation:
I = 3.9098*10^3mm^4, y = 476.477mm ( from calculation ) / 2 = 238.24mmm (extremum section is same as previous so the value is not changed)
S = 16.411mm^3
Result:
|
Section |
Moment of inertia ( I) (mm^4) |
Distance between the neutral axis from extreme end (y) (mm) |
Section modulus (S) (mm^3) |
|
Current section |
3.5598*10^3 |
238.24 |
14.942 |
|
Modified section |
3.9098*10^3 |
238.24 |
16.411 |
Since the section modulus is directly proportional to the moment of inertia, the value of moment of inertia increases, the section modulus also increases thereby increasing the strength of the part.
From the above table, it is clearly indicated that the previous section value of moment of inertia is less than modified section value of moment of inertia.
Thus the strength is slightly increased compared to the previous section.
