Fender Design Challenge
FENDER DESIGN
Fender:
Fender is a part of an automobile that frames a wheel underside of it. It is basically made of sheet metal.
Purpose:
To prevent sand, mud, stone, rocks, liquids, from being thrown into the air by the rotating tyre.
To prevent injuries to pedestrians and prevent the motion of these above particles.
Two types of fender:
1) Full bumper type:
This model type is used in olden days. It increases the material usage. The size of the fender is very large
2) Half bumper type:
This type is currently used. It reduces wastage of materials. It reduces proportion of steel weight and increases the performance of the vehicle.

Mountings in Fender model:
After fender making, it needs to get assemble in the car. so depending upon the area in the fender design, the mountings in the fender are classified into five types:
1) Drip area
2) Body
3) A pillar
4) sill
5) Cowl
6) Bumper
7) Baffle

Below are the detailed information for the fender mounting:
1) Drip Area:
Drip area mounting is the main area in design for the consideration of fender design. This is because in this area where the engine of the car is mounted. So drip area is very important in fender mounting.
In fender top area the distance from the starting point and ending point of the curve must be 150mm (gap of 150mm is applied due tp the assembly of headlamp Hsg mtg) and 200mm (gap of 200mm is applied due to the assembly of cowl mtg) respectively.
The model is designed as per the given section. The draft angle should be giiven according to the given section for consideration of the springback effect and the radius are also given. There should be no sharp corners around the edges of the sheet metal. The vertical distance is made such that the tool workability is considered for the design for the mounting hole.
Rib (bead or dart) should be added incase the length is exceeded for giving the strength to the mounting.

2) Body Area:
The Body area is the area where the area is for mounting the car side door.
3) A Pillar Area:
Pillars are vertical supports on a vehicle. They are located around all the glass on an automobile. They are important for holding glass in place and adding structural integrity to a vehicle, primarily the roof. The "A" pillar holds the windshield in place

4) Sill Area:
On a door frame, the sill is the portion of the door frame that runs along the bottom and sits directly on the foundation of your floor. It is the cross piece that actually completes the pre-installed door frame. The sill is actually underneath your threshold. The door seal needs to be sealed to prevent water damage.
5) Cowl Area:
The “cowl” is a plastic part located in the space between the hood and windshield. This is the space where your vehicle’s windshield wipers are located.

6) Bumper Mounting Area:
A bumper is a structure attached to or integrated with the front and rear ends of a motor vehicle, to absorb impact in a minor collision, ideally minimizing repair costs. Bumpers ideally minimize height mismatches between vehicles and protect pedestrians from injury.

7) Baffle Area:
Baffle area is the area above the wheel of the car where the fender of the car is mounted to the baffle part. It is a plastic part used to prevent the fender body from damage against the particles from wheel such as stone, water and other particles that will damage the body.
