Section Modulus calculation and optimization

SECTION MODULUS

About section modulus

  • Ratio of total moment resisted by the section to the stress in the extreme fibre
  • It gives us an idea about how much of load the given structure can take
  • if the section modulus increases the moment of resistance increases and hence its load bearing capacity.

Formula to find the section modulus

S=I/y where,

S - Section modulus

I - Moment of inertia value from the ineryia analysis

y - Dista

here we are going to find section modulus for hood

intersecting the part by using plane

extracting both outer boundries

creating point and line then spliting extra part

join and fill the section

using measure inertia tool

measuring total distance and we have to take half distance from neutral axis

we got total 483.835mm length

we need to take 483.835/2=241.9175

calculating section modulus for first section

S = I/y

here, I= 9.535*10^7m^4

y=241.9175

S = 9.535*10^7/241.9175

S = 39.414*10^6mm^4

calculation for next part

for that we have to take parallel curve 0.5mm

create point and line then fill

go for measure inertia and measure part

section modulus calculation for second section

S = I/y

here, I= 9.98383*10^7m^4

y=241.9175

S = 9.98383*10^7/241.9175

S = 41.269*10^6mm^4

conclusion

So decreasing the distance between two panels leads to increase in section modulus, so resistance to bending also increases, and strength of hood also increases.
