Section Modulus calculation and optimization

HOOD SECTION MODULUS CALCULATION AND OPTIMIZATION

Objective-To Calculate Section Modulus of Hood, taking intersection curve of hood to Check the Strength of Hood Using S=I/Y Formula.

Section Modulus-Ratio of Total Moment Resisted by the section to the stress in the extreme fibre. It give us an idea about how much of load the given structure can take.

Types of Section Modulus

  • Elastic section modulus
  • Plastic section modulus

For general design, the Elastic section modulus is used, applying upto yield point for most metals and other common materials. The elastic modulus is defined as S=I/y, where I is the Second moment of inertia and y is the distance from the Neutral axis to any given fibre.

The section modulus of the cross sectional shape is of significant importance in designing of the beams. it is a direct measure of the strength of the beam. A beam that has a larger section modulus than another will be stronger and capable of supporting greater loads.

It includes the idea that most of the work in bending is being done by the extreme fibres of the beam, ie the top and bottom fibres of the section.

Calculating Section Inertia of Intersection curve 1(Previously designed hood)

Maximum Inertia 8.966208982e+07mm^4
Minimum Inertia 2.873708321e+05mm^4

Calculating Section Inertia of Intersection Curve 2(Modified Curve)

I Increase the height of Curve 2 by offset it 0.5mm outer to get better strength because larger section modulus Hood is stronger and capable of supporting greater loads.

Maximum Inertia 8.966032254e+07mm^4
Minimum Inertia 2.921122678e+05mm^4

Here I Use Minimum inertia value to calculate section modulus because minimum inertia value is where the parts start to break and Maximum inertia is where it completely breaks. So we need the threshold value where the part fails. So we take the minimum moment of inertia.

Section Modulus for Curve1

S=I/Y, S=605.09mm^3, Here I is moment of inertia and Y is the distance between neutral axis and Extreme end of object.

Section Modulus for Curve2

S=615.07mm^3

By Comparing Minimum Inertia values of both Curves, we get higher value in 2nd Curve so now we calculate section modulus value of both curve and the 2nd Intersection curve give us higher value, which means it is More Stronger than previous one.

Conclusion-I Completed the Section Modulus Calculation for both Intersection Curves, and the new Curve give us better strength because it has higher value of Section modulus.
