Section Modulus calculation and optimization
Aim: Section Modulus Calculation and Optimization of the Car Hood Design.
Objective: To improve the section modulus of the Car Hood Design.
Introduction:
Section Modulus: It is the geometric property of the given cross-section of any shaft or beam structure. It is the direct measure of the strength of the shaft section.
It is the ratio of the Moment of Inertia of the section and the distance from the neutral axis to the extreme fiber.
S= Section Modulus(mm^3)
I= Moment of Inertia(mm^4)
Y= Distance between the neutral axis and the extreme end of the object(mm)
Calculation:
1) Original Hood Design:
Hood design created is imported and section analysis is done. The intersection curve of the Hood assembly is created.
Using the Section Inertia Analysis command we will get the values for I.

Minimum Moment of Inertia is considered for calculation.
I= 2.260432089*10^5 mm^4
Y= Total Distance/2 = 878.3484/2 = 439.1742 mm
Section Modulus, S= (2.260432089*10^5)/439.1742= 514.7 mm^3
2) Optimised Hood Design:
In order to improve the Section Modulus value, the inner panel is increased by 0.3mm thickness outside and section inertia analysis is done and Section modulus is calculated.

Minimum Moment of Inertia is considered for calculation.
I= 2.279544962*10^5 mm^4
Y= Total Distance/2 = 878.3484/2 = 439.1742 mm
Section Modulus, S= (2.279544962*10^5)/439.1742= 519.05 mm^3
Conclusion:
By comparing Section Modulus values from case 1 & case 2, we found there is an increase in the value of S, after increasing the thickness value.
Section Modulus increases with an increase in the Moment of Inertia, Section area.
Higher the section modulus more the strength of the part.
