Section Modulus calculation and optimization

To find out section modulus

S=I/Y

Here, I is “moment of inertia” and

y is distance from “neutral axis” to top or bottom of fiber.

Unit of a “section modulus” is mm^3

As we absorb above equation of Section modulus,

Section modulus is directly proportional to Moment of Inertia(MOI)

For unit Y distance, S= 7.024233635e+08 mm^3

Section Modulus can also be defined as the ratio of total moment resisted by the section to the stress in the extreme fibre which is equal to yield stress. Also, Section modulus is the direct Measure of Strength of a beam. Higher the Section Modulus higher will be the Resistance to Bending.

Also,

Bending moment equation,

M/I = E/R = Sigma/y

M= moment

I= moment of inertia

E= youngs modulus

R= radius of curvature

y= distance of element from centre axis

Sigma= stress

I.e M=Sigma. So, By increasing section modulus we can increase strength of hood.

Section modulus is directly dependent on the area moment of inertia and the distance from the neutral axis. Hence, to improve the geometry of the carry more bending load, the section modulus can be improved by increasing the area MOI(Moment of Inertia) of a given section.

If we spread out the mass distribution further away from the axis of rotation, the moment of inertia will increase. Thereby incresing strength of hood.

The more the mass away from the neutral axis the more will be the MOI.
