Section Modulus calculation and optimization

1)

it is a geometric property for a given cross-section used in the design of beams or flexural members. Other geometric properties used in design include area for tension and shear, radius of gyration for compression, and moment of inertia and polar moment of inertia for stiffness.

There are two types of section moduli, the elastic section modulus and the plastic section modulus.

For general design, the Elastic section modulus is used, applying up to the yield point for most metals and other common materials.

The elastic section modulus is defined as S = I / y, where I is the second moment of area (or area moment of inertia, not to be confused with moment of inertia) and y is the distance from the neutral axis to any given fibre.

It is also often used to determine the yield moment (My) such that My = S × σy, where σy is the yield strength of the material which is maximum allowable load in a mechanical component.

The Plastic section modulus is used for materials where elastic yielding is acceptable and plastic behavior is assumed to be an acceptable limit.

 case(1)

 we take the interasection of hood from the middle centre of part  and do the section analysis .

MOI=2.77400383e+05mm^4

Y=876.1828mm

S= I/Y = 2.77400383e+05mm^4/876.1828mm

S=316.6010369069103mm^3=316.6010mm^3

y=distance from neutral axis

2nd case

To increase the strength of the above section, I increased 1mm the distance between the outer panel geometry to inner panel geometry then repeated the above said procedures then we have got much better strength value. See below section 2 calculation part and images.

MOI=2.851711257e+05mm^4

Y=876.1828mm

S= I/Y = 2.77400383e+05mm^4/876.1828mm

S=325.4698970351849mm^3=325.4698mm^3

  we can observe the both value of section modulus and we come to conclusion

we got increse value of section modulus of case 2

 Thus by increasing the distance between the Inner and outer panel of the Hood assembly we got the higher value of section modulus hence the strength also increased.
