Section Modulus calculation and optimization

Section Modulus

Section modulus is a geometric property of a cross section used in the design of beams or other flexural members that will experience deflection due to an applied bending moment. The units of section modulus are length^3

S = I/y

Where,

S = Section Modulus

I = Moment of Inertia

y = distance between the neutral axis and the extreme end of the object

Section modulus is also denoted by Z.

Fallowing are the two types of section modulus,

Elastic section modulus and

Plastic section modulus

For general design, the elastic section modulus is used.

The plastic section modulus is used to calculate the plastic moment.

Example of section modulus

Shape; Rectangle

Solid arrow is the neutral axis.

Equation;

Result of the Section Modulus.
