Section Modulus calculation and optimization

Section modulus

Section modulus is a geometric property for a given cross-section used in the design of beams or flexural members

Section modulus of the hood

S=I/y

S = Section Modulus

I = Moment of Inertia

y = distance between the neutral axis and the extreme end of the object

here we are taking the minimum moment of inertia for the safety aspects

so, I =3.16x10^5 mm^4

y=438.1 mm

S= 729.29 mm^3

2nd case

after optimization

The hood inner panel’s curve is offseted by 0.5mm outwards

MOI = 3.208x10^5 mm^4

y= 438.1 mm

S= 732.2 mm^3

Conclusion

when the section area is increased the section modulus has also increased
