Section Modulus calculation and optimization
Section Modulus
The section modulus is a cross-sectional geometric property of structural elements such as beams, columns, slabs, etc. and it is used to calculate stresses in Cross-sections. In general, it can be said that the greater the dimensions of a cross-section under a given load, the greater the Section modulus and the smaller the bending stress.
Objective:
- Use the section from your hood design and calculate the section modulus using the formula S = I/y
- S = Section Modulus
- I = Moment of inertia
- Y = Distance between the neutral axis and the extreme end of the object
- Come up with a new section that has improved the section modulus of the previous section and mention what change you made that has increased the strength.
Initial Hood Design and it\’s moment of inertia
Moment of inertia =8.324008(mm4)
S = Section Modulus
I = 8.324008
Y = 479.7 mm/2
= 239.85 mm
So, S = I/y
S = 8.324008
239.85
S = 0.034705
Hood Optimised Design
After changes in hood inner panel 0.75 mm offset outside from its original position
Moment of inertia =8.382850(mm4)
S = Section Modulus
I = 8.382850
Y = 479.7 mm/2
= 239.85 mm
So, S = I/y
S = 8.382850
239.85
S = 0.0349503
