Section Modulus calculation and optimization

Calculation and Optimization of Section Modulus

It is defined as the ratio of moment of inertia of a section about its centroidal axis & to the distance of the extreme neutral axis. It is a geometric property for a given cross-section used in the design of beams or flexural members. It is denoted by S.

Mathematically,

S= I/Y

Where

I = moment of inertia,

Y = distance of extreme layer from neutral axis.

The unit of section modulus is m^3.

It gives us an idea of how much idea a structure can withstand. When section modulus increases the moment of resistance increases and hence the load bearing capacity increases.

Here's the section inertia analysis of the previous hood design

With the following analysis we determine the section modulus of the hood design and also optimize the hood design

  • Section inertia analysis of the current cross-section of the hood design.

The moment of inertia values are represented in the above analysis and the Y value will remain constant for all the cases i.e,

Y= 244.45715mm.

section modulus Z for the above

Z= I/Y= 662.983 mm^3

After optimization of the above design again the analysis is performed

For the above analysis
Z= 680.683 mm^3

The analysis is perfomed angain to further optimize the design to suggest to the CAE team to help the to make the further decision for the production of the part.

The optimized section modulus Z is determined

Z=699.142 mm^3

The change in the cross-section of the design varies the section modulus thus provides better strength.
