Section Modulus calculation and optimization
AIM: To calculate the Section Modulus using the formula
S = I/y
Section modulus: The section modulus is a cross-sectional geometric property of structural elements such as beams, columns, slabs, etc. and it is used to calculate stresses in Cross-sections.
- Ratio of total moment resisted by the section to stress in the extreme fibre.
- It gives us an idea how much load can the give structure withstand.
- If the section modulus increases the moment of resistance increases and hence its load bearing capacity.
To find out the section modulus the given formula should be used
S = I/y
Where,
S = Section Modulus
I = Moment of Inertia
y = distance between the neutral axis and the extreme end of the object
For calculating hoods section modulus we will take it from the centre to the outer edge of hemmed outer panel.
CASE 1
HERE the first photo in which moment of inertia can be seen calculated in nx cad

second photo is used to calculate the y. the total length is used to calculate then divide it by 2
we will the length from neutral axis which is y.

s=I/y
s=(1.221024655*10^5)/244.45715 (mm^4)
s=499.48412 mm^4
case 2
Optimised hood design
here we see that by increase the seccion area momen of inertia also be increased
S ∝ I

by seeing both photo we can say that in second case the MOI has increased by increaseind the sectio.
s=I/Y
s=1.398327546 *10^5/244.45715 (mm^4)
s=572.201 mm^4
Conclusion:
Resulting by comparing case 1 & case 2,
- The section modulus value of case 2 is higher than the case 1
- As we increase the section area, the moment of inertia & section modulus increase which means strength and load material also increase. Which the moment of inertia directly proportional to the strength of the material.
