Section Modulus calculation and optimization
Use the Section from your Hood design and calculate the Section Modulus using the formula
S = I/y
Where,
S = Section Modulus
I = Moment of Inertia
y = distance between the neutral axis and the extreme end of the object
Come up with a new section that has an improved Section Modulus compared to the previous one and mention what changes you made which resulted in the increased strength.

SECTION MODULUS CALCULATION AND OPTIMIZATION
- The elastic section modulus is defined as S = I / y, where I is the second moment of area (or area moment of inertia, not to be confused with moment of inertia) and y is the distance from the neutral axis to any given fibre.
- Section modulus is directly dependent on the area moment of inertia and the distance from the neutral axis. Hence, to improve the geometry of the carry more bending load, the section modulus can be improved by increasing the area MOI of a given section.

- This strength can measured directly from Section modulus formula, and defined by below formula.
OBJECTIVE:
- To increase the Section Modulus of the hood by necessary changes using NX cad.
Importance:
- It is significant for beam and flexural member design.
- More the section modulus, the more the member is resistant to the bending of the beam.
- It is easier to calculate stresses in the beam and an exact measure of the strength of steel.
- If two beams are made of the same material and comparing the “section modulus” of two beams, the beam with bigger section modulus will be tougher and more capable to withstand larger loads.
Section Modulus calculation of the Hood Design:
case 1
IMAX:-4.838137632X106mm4
Imin:-1.502358x104mm4
Total length of 'Y' value was 877.0057mm
So,at neutral axis we need 'Y' value:-Y/2=877.0057/2=438.50285mm
1)Section modulus(S):-I/Y=4.838137632X106mm4/438.50285mm
=1.1034X104mm3(Maximum strength).
2) Section modulus(S):-I/Y=1.502358x104mm4/438.50285mm
=0.3427x102mm3(minimum strength).

case 2
- Now, one more trail is that, here the inner panel curve offsetting outside by 1mmi.e increasing in cross sectional area,the results shown below.

1)Section modulus(S):-I/Y=4.854389762X106mm4/438.50285mm11017.9
=1.1070X104mm3(Maximum strength).
2) Section modulus(S):-I/Y=1.459180134x104mm4/438.50285mm
=0.3328x102mm3(minimum strength).
The strength of an hood from 0.3427x102mm3to 0.3328X102mm3
- So, here when comparing both the hoods there is changes in both MAX and MIN strength values,what i came to know that when i increased sectional area by 1mm the value of minimum strength was increased from 0.3427x102mm3to 0.3328X102mm33,Hence with increase in cross sectional area results in increase in strength.
- But, when we seen the value of maximum strength its slightly decreases from 0.3427x102mm3to 0.3328X102mm3,i think this due to design of hood, here what we want to know that when increase in cross sectional area there will be increase in minimum strength or maximum strength or increase in both.
Conclusion:
- Section modulus is directly dependent on the area moment of inertia and the distance from the neutral axis. Hence, to improve the geometry of the carry more bending load, the section modulus can be improved by increasing the area MOI of a given section.
We can increase the section modulus just increasing the gap between the outer & inner panel.
