Section Modulus calculation and optimization

Section modulus: It is the ratio of of moment of inertia of section about the neutral axis to the distance of outermost layer                                     from the neutral axis

Section modulus (S) = Moment of inertia (I) / Distance between neutral axis and the extreme end of the object (Y)

Bending stress / Distance between neutral axis and extreme end of object = Bending moment / moment of inertia

* If  section modulus increases the moment of resistance increases and hence its load bearing capacity

Section modulus of the Front hood using formula

*First take section of the front hood in X-axis

*Using section inertia analysis we get maximum and minimum moment of inertia of the section

* Always consider minimum moment of inertia

*From A to B horizontal dimension we get disatnce between neutral axis and the extreme end of the of the object

First section:

M (max)=8.3249 x 10(+5) mm4

M (min)= 6.8383 x 10(+3) mm4

Distance Y = 478 mm

Section modulus = 14.3 mm3

Optimized section of the front hood:

M (max)=8.3007 x 10(+5) mm4

M (min)= 7.0635 x 10(+3) mm4

Distance Y = 478 mm

Section modulus = 14.7 mm3

Optimized by increasing 0.5mm distance between outer panel and inner panel
