3. Procedure for Concrete Mix Design of M35 Concrete

ftarget = fck + 1.65 x s

ftarget‘ is the Target Average Compressive Strength at 28 days,

‘fck’ is the Characteristic Compressive Strength at 28 days, and

‘s’ is the Standard Deviation

as per the table I of IS: 10262-2009 , the standard deviation, s is 5.0 N/mm2

Therefore, target strength = 35 + 1.65 x 5.0 = 43.25N/mm2

4. Selection of Water/Cement Ratio

From Table 5 of IS:456-2000

Maximum water-cement ratio = 0.45

From Table 1&2 of IS Code 10262-2019

Maximum water-cement ratio = 0.43

hence we select minimum from both of them i.e.- 0.43

5. Selection of Water Content

From Table 2 of IS:456-2000 maximum water content =186 litres (for 25 to 50 mm slump range) for 20 mm aggregate.

Estimated water content for 100 mm slump =186+(6/100) x 186 =197 litre

6. Calculation of Cement Content

Water-cement ratio =0.43

Cement content = 197/0.43 = 458.14kg/m3

From Table 5 of IS 456-2000 minimum cement content for ‘very severe’ exposure condition = 340 kg/m3

340 kg/m3 <458.14 kg/m3, hence, we use 458.14kg/m3.

  • Calculation of fly ash

30% of fly ash i.e. - 458.14 x .30 = 137.442 kg/m3

  • Cement Content

458.14-137.442=320.698kg/m3

7. The Proportion of the Volume of Coarse Aggregate and Fine Aggregate Content

From Table 3 of IS10262-2009 the volume of coarse aggregate corresponding to 20 mm size aggregate and fine aggregate Zone I for a water-cement ratio of 0.50 = 0.60.

In the present case, the water-cement ratio is 0.43. Therefore. the volume of coarse aggregate is required to be increased to decrease the fine aggregate content. As the water-cement ratio is lower by 0.07. the proportion of the volume of coarse aggregate is increased by 0.02 (at the rate of -/+ 0.01 for every ± 0.05 change in the water-cement ratio). Therefore. the corrected proportion of the volume of coarse aggregate for the water-cement ratio of 0.43 = 0.60+0.014= 0.614

NOTE – In case the coarse aggregate is not angular one. then also the volume of coarse aggregate may be required 10 be increased suitably, based on experience.

For pumpable concrete, these values should be reduced by 10 percent.

Therefore, volume of coarse aggregate = 0.614 x 0.9 = 0.553.

Volume of fine aggregate content =1 – 0.553 =0.447

. Mix Calculations

a) Volume of concrete = 1m3

b) Volume of cement = (Mass of Cement/Specific Gravity of Cement) X (1/1000)

= (320.698/3.15) X (1/1000)

= 0.1018 m3

c) Volume of water = (Mass of Water/Specific Gravity of Water) X (1/1000)

= (197/1) X (1/1000)

= 0.197 m3

d) Volume of fly ash = Mass of fly ash/Specific Gravity of fly ash) X (1/1000)

= (137.442/2.95) X (1/1000)

=0.0466 m3

e) Volume of all aggregate = (a-(b+c+d))

= 1 – (0.1018 + 0.197+0.0466)

= 0.655 m3

f) Mass of coarse aggregate = Volume of all Aggregate X Volume of coarse Aggregate X Specific Gravity of Coarse Aggregate X 1000

= 0.655 x 0.553 x 2.74 x 1000

= 980.35 kg

g) Mass of fine aggregate = Volume of all Aggregate X Volume of Fine Aggregate X Specific Gravity of Fine Aggregate X 1000

= 0.655x 0.447 x 2.65 x 1000

= 775.88kg

9. Concrete Mix Proportions

  • Cement = 320.698 kg/m3
  • Fly ash = 137.442 kg/m3
  • Water = 197 ltr/m3
  • Fine aggregates = 775.88 kg/m3
  • Coarse aggregate = 980.35 kg/m3
  • W/c = 0.43

Final Concrete Mix Ratio

Mix ratio of M45 is

1 : 1.69 : 2.14 (Cement+fly ash : Fine aggregate : Coarse aggregate).

1 : 0.428 : 2.42 : 3.06 (Cement : fly ash : Fine aggregate : Coarse aggregate)

01(b). Calculate the Concrete Mix Design for M50 grade concrete without Fly ash?

given concrete mix design steps for concrete of M 50 grade is followed as per IS:10262-2009

. Conditions for Mix Design Concrete

  • Grade designation : M 50
  • Type of cement : OPC 53 grade confirming to IS 8112
  • Maximum nominal size of aggregate : 20 mm
  • Minimum cement content : 360 kg/m3
  • Maximum water-cement ratio : 0.40
  • Workability : 50-100 mm (slump)
  • Exposure condition : Extreme (for reinforced concrete)
  • Method of concrete placing : Pumping
  • Degree of supervision : Good

  • Maximum cement content : 450 kg/m3
  • Superplasticizers

as per the table I of IS: 10262-2009 , the standard deviation, s is 5.0 N/mm2

Therefore, target strength = 50 + 1.65 x 5.0 = 58.25N/mm2

. Selection of Water/Cement Ratio

From Table 5 of IS:456-2000

Maximum water-cement ratio = 0.40

From Table 1&2 of IS Code 10262-2019

Maximum water-cement ratio = 0.35

hence we select minimum from both of them i.e.- 0.35

. Selection of Water Content

From Table 2 of IS:456-2000 maximum water content =186 litres (for 25 to 50 mm slump range) for 20 mm aggregate.

Estimated water content for 100 mm slump =186+(6/100) x 186 =197 litre

we use Superplasticizers which reduce water content 20%

197*20/100=39.4

197-39.4=157.6

Calculation of Cement Content

Water-cement ratio =0.35

Cement content = 157.6/0.35 = 450.28kg/m3

From Table 5 of IS 456-2000 minimum cement content for ‘EXTREME’ exposure condition = 360 kg/m3

360 kg/m3 <450.28kg/m3, But accourding to IS;456-2000 max. cement content should not be more than 450kg.so here in above case we use code value

450.28>450 so we use 450kg/m3

7. The Proportion of the Volume of Coarse Aggregate and Fine Aggregate Content

From Table 3 of IS10262-2009 the volume of coarse aggregate corresponding to 20 mm size aggregate and fine aggregate Zone I for a water-cement ratio of 0.50 =0.62.

In the present case, the water-cement ratio is 0.35. Therefore. the volume of coarse aggregate is required to be increased to decrease the fine aggregate content. As the water-cement ratio is lower by 0.15. the proportion of the volume of coarse aggregate is increased by 0.02 (at the rate of -/+ 0.01 for every ± 0.05 change in the water-cement ratio). Therefore. the corrected proportion of the volume of coarse aggregate for the water-cement ratio of 0.35 = 0.60+0.03=0.63

NOTE – In case the coarse aggregate is not angular one. then also the volume of coarse aggregate may be required 10 be increased suitably, based on experience.

For pumpable concrete, these values should be reduced by 10 percent.

Therefore, volume of coarse aggregate = 0.63 x 0.9 = 0.57

Volume of fine aggregate content =1 – 0.57 =0.43

. Mix Calculations

a) Volume of concrete = 1m3

b) Volume of cement = (Mass of Cement/Specific Gravity of Cement) X (1/1000)

= (450/3.15) X (1/1000)

= 0.143m3

c) Volume of water = (Mass of Water/Specific Gravity of Water) X (1/1000)

= (157.6/1) X (1/1000)

= 0.157 m3

e) Volume of all aggregate = (a-(b+c+d))

= 1 – (0.143 + 0.157+0)

= 0.70 m3

f) Mass of coarse aggregate = Volume of all Aggregate X Volume of coarse Aggregate X Specific Gravity of Coarse Aggregate X 1000

= 0.70 x 0.57 x 2.74 x 1000

= 1093.26kg

g) Mass of fine aggregate = Volume of all Aggregate X Volume of Fine Aggregate X Specific Gravity of Fine Aggregate X 1000

= 0.70x 0.43 x 2.65 x 1000

= 797.65kg

9. Concrete Mix Proportions

  • Cement =450kg/m3
  • Water = 157 ltr/m3
  • Fine aggregates =797.65kg/m3
  • Coarse aggregate = 1093.26 kg/m3
  • W/c = 0.35

Mix ratio of M50 is 1 : 1.77 : 2.43 (Cement : Fine aggregate : Coarse aggregate).
