Project - Analysis of a practical automotive wiring circuit
1. Identify each of the major elements in the above automotive wiring diagram.
Battery - this is the most important element in car electronic systems. battery provide initial kick start to engine via starter motor. and there after it provides electrical current to the other electrical components.
Starter Motor - starter motor used to crank the engine.
ammeter - To show the actual current in a circuit
Fuel gauge- to show fuel level
Gas tank unit - it has sensor which identifies the level of fuel in tank and send signal to the fuel gauge.
headlight & taillight - to have good visibility on roads at night & taillight is to show the presence of car to driver behind the vehicle.
ignition coil- to step up the current to spark fuel air mixture
distributor- is used to distribute the current provided by ignition coil to spark plugs according to firing order of engine.
generator - this device which converts mechanical energy into electrical energy & its used to charge battery .
2) Explain the purpose and working of any three elements briefly.
Generator - Generator is the device which is used to charge the battery while vehicle is running. Generator converts mechanical energy into electrical energy. working principal is similar to the traditional electric motor. its consist Stator and rotor, the rotor has permanent magnets inside & stator has stator windings inside. when engine starts rotating generator starts rotating along with it.at this point magnetic poles of the permanent magnet interact with magnetic field of a stator winding to form a magnetic field. due to changing effect of magnetic field,an induce current with varying magnitude & direction will generated in coil.
Battery
An automotive battery, or car battery, is a rechargeable battery that is used to start a motor vehicle. Its main purpose is to provide an electric current to the electric-powered starting motor, which in turn starts the chemically-powered internal combustion engine that actually propels the vehicle.
Distributor
A distributor is an electric and mechanical device used in the ignition system of older spark ignition engines. The distributor's main function is to route electricity from the ignition coil to each spark plug at the correct time. A distributor consists of a rotating arm ('rotor') that is attached to the top of a rotating 'distributor shaft'. The rotor constantly receives high-voltage electricity from an ignition coil via brushes at the centre of the rotor. As the rotor spins, its tip passes close to (but does not touch) the output contacts for each cylinder. As the electrified tip passes each output contact, the high-voltage electricity is able to 'jump' across the small gap.[1] This burst of electricity then travels to the spark plug (via high tension leads), where it ignites the air-fuel mixture in the combustion chamber
3. If the total load is 10A from battery, what should be the fuse rating?
Typically, the fuse rating should be slightly higher than the maximum continuous current drawn by the load. A common practice is to choose a fuse rated at 1.25 times the maximum expected current to allow for start-up surges and other temporary conditions without blowing the fuse.
1.25 times the maximum load current of 10A gives:
1.25×10 A=12.5 A
In practice, you would choose a fuse rating close to 12.5A. Common fuse ratings available might include 12A, 15A, or 20A. Since 12.5A is not a standard rating. In this case 15A fuse would be a reasonable choice.
4. If 500W is the load, what is the voltage and capacity of battery you recommend?
to determine the appropriate battery capacity for a 500W load at 12V, we can use the formula relating power, voltage, and current:
P=V×I
P is the power (in watts),
V is the voltage (in volts), and
I is the current (in amperes).
Given:
P=500 W
𝑉=12
First, calculate the current I
I = p/v = 500/12 = 41.67 A
Now, for battery capacity, we typically use ampere-hours (Ah). Battery capacity in Ah is related to the current I and the time t it can supply that current. If we assume we want the battery to last for about 1 hour (which is a common standard), the capacity C in ampere-hours needed can be approximated by:
C=I × t= 41.67×1 = 41.67 Ah
Therefore, a 12V battery with a capacity of around 42 Ah would be recommended for powering a 500W load for one hour. This ensures the battery can supply the necessary current without being excessively discharged, which can prolong its lifespan and efficiency.
5. Identify any two elements which are connected parallel to each other. Why they are connected in parallel?
Headlight beams are connected in parallel to each other.Headlights in cars are connected in parallel because it ensures each headlight gets the full voltage it needs to shine brightly and consistently. This setup allows them to operate independently, so if one headlight has an issue, the others can still work fine. It also makes maintenance easier since you can replace or fix one headlight without affecting the others.
6. Identify any two elements which are connected in series. Why they are connected in series?
Ammeter
Ammeters are connected in series with the circuit whose current is being measured. This is because an ammeter measures the current flowing through it, and to do so accurately, it must be placed in series with the circuit component through which the current is passing.
