Project 2 - Review of Shear, Moment & Splice connections in StaadPro Connection Module

Question. Design and optimize typical shear, moment and Splice joints in Staad Connection module for the following structure modelled in staadpro. Generate Report.

Design and optimize braced connection (use US standard connections) in RAM Connection.

Structure: A 2D portal frame fixed support spanning 15m with a pitched roof ridge height of 12m with eaves Height of 11.5m. A uniformly distributed load of 10kN/m is applied on the roof beams. Optimize the beams and columns for 85% utilization and consider splice joints at 6m from base and 3m from beam column joints. Consider a hanger beam shear connected with column support of 4m height at 3m from beam-column corner joint carrying 5kN/m vertical load and 5kN horizontal load, hanger beam end is tied with a brace to the eave.

Solution:

AIM: To design and optimize typical shear, moment and Splice Joints in STAAD ProConnection Module. Also generate the report.

PROCEDURE:

  • The very first step in order to create the 2D portal frame in the STAAD Pro Connection software. First of all open that software. Create a new project and start to draw the 2D portal frame in the software.
  • In order to create the 2d portal frame first of all draw the node and create the frame according to the given data.

Given data:

  • 2D-Portal Frame fixed support spanning 15m.
  • Pitched roof ridge height of 12m with eaves height of 11.5m.
  • Uniformly Distributed Load (UDL) of 10kN/m.
  • Consider splice joints at 6m from base and 3m from beam column joints.
  • Hanger beam connected with column support of 4m height at 3m from beam-column corner joint carying 5kN horizontal load, and hanger is tied with a brace to the eave.

So according to the abve given data we will be designing the 2D-Frame.

Step01_Geometry:

  • We have created the nodes for the eaves height of 11.5m just as we can see in the below given image:

  • Next draw the beams from nodes to the nodes and in order to do that go to the Home ribbon tab and in that ribbon tab there will be an option named as the Add Beam in that ribbon tab just click on that option just as shown in the below given image:

  • Then draw the beam from node to node, connect the beam form one node to the other node just as shown in the below given image:

  • Next is to copy and paste the beam and node at the distance of 15m just as shown in the below given image:

  • Next draw the pitched roof of height 12m, do the same procedure for the rest just as shown in the below given image:

  • Next draw the joints just as shown in the below given image:

  • Now our 2D-Frame is completed as we can see in the below given image:

Step02_Properties:

  • Next provide some Properties and in order to assign the properties go to the Analytical Modelling select option Properties just as shown in the below given image:

  • At the right-side of the screen there will be an option named as the Properties- Whole Structure and in that dialouge box there will be multiple options and in that multiple options there will be an option named as the Section Database just hit that button just as shown in the below given image:

  • Next there will be another dialouge box named as the Section Profile Tables in that dialouge box select the appropriate sections just as shown in the below given image:

  • Next is to assign these properties and below is the image after assigning the properties for the 2D-frame, as we can see below:

Step03_Specifications:

  • Next provide some Specifications and in order to assign the specifications go to the Analytical Modelling select option Specifications just as shown in the below given image:

  • Then there will be an option named as the Beam at the right side of the screen as we can see in the below given image:

  • Then there will be another dialouge box named as the Member Specification in that dialouge box specify the Release at the start and ends just as shown in the below given image:

  • Now assign the specifications just as we can see in the below given image:

Step04_Supports:

  • Next we will be providing some Supports to the 2D frame and in order to do that in Analytical Modelling there will be an option named as the Supports just hit on that button just as shown in the below given image:

  • Next there will be dialouge box for providing the support just provide the support as we can see in the below given image:

  • Now supports have been created as we can see in the below given image:

Step05_Loadings:

  • Next we will be assigning the loads to the 2D frame structure, and in order to do that go to the Loading option in the Analytical Modelling hit that button just as shown in the below given image:

  • Next there will be another dialouge box name as the Load and Definition, in that dialouge box apply the loads just as shown in the below given image:

  • Below is the 2D-Frame after applying the Loadings in the below given image:

  • Next we will be assigning the Load Combinations, and in order to assign the Load combinations go to the Load cases Details just click on that option next there will be an option named as the Add just click on that option and add the Load combinations just as shown in the below given image:

Step06_Analysis & Design:

  • Next we will be doing the Run Analysis, and in order to do that first go to the Analysis and design tab there will be an option named as the Run Analysis just hit on that button or just presst Ctrl+F5 just as shown in the below given image:

  • Below is the result of the Analysis, we got 0 errors, 0 warnings and 0 Notes as we can see in the image:

Step07_Connection Design:

  • Next go to the Connection Design tab which is available in the Workflow section just hit that button as we can see in the below given image:

  • And then next there will be another dialouge box named as the RAM Connection Validation box in which we have been provided with the information regarding our 2D-Frame just as we can see in the below given image:

  • Below is the screen for the connection design:

  • Next we will be designing the connections, and in order to do that select the joints which we want to design as we can see in the below given image:

BEAM SPLICE JOINT CONNECTION:

  • Next go to the Connection Design ribbon tab and under that ribbon there will be an option named as the Assign Connections and in that option there will be sub-ribbon named as the Basic Connection just as we can see in the below given image:

  • Next there will be another dialouge box named as the Basic Connections opens, and in that dialouge box there are various options availble and in that options select those options which is needed for the assignment and then hit OK button just as shown in the below given image:

  • The frame has been created as we can see in the below given image:

  • Next there will be another option named as the Edit which is present at the bottom of the screen just click on that option just as shown in the below given image:

  • After clicking on the Edit button, the new RAM Connection Edit page opens and in that page do the editing works precisely just as shown in the below given image:

DXF Details:

  • On the right hand side of the screen there is an option named as the DXF, just click on that option just as shown in the below given image:

  • After selecting the DXF, it gives us the drafting view the Top View, Lateral View and the Front View of the connections just as shown in the below given image:

Data Details:

  • So next we will review the results for the joint and in order to view the report or the result there will be an option named as the Data just as shown in the below given image:
