Project 2_Design & Analysis of a Hostel building at Guwahati, Assam
In this project, participants will get to experience the entire design process from modelling, analysis, design, and preparation of construction drawings. The architectural drawings of a G+3 RCC building is provided. The following information on the building is to be used:
- Location – Guwahati, Assam
- Function – Hostel block in an academic institute

The walls will be made of AAC blocks. Other loadings are to be calculated as per the architectural drawings.
The buildings rests on type 3 soil. Piles of length 10 meters and 500 mm diameter with a load-carrying capacity of 280 KN is to be used.
The ground floor level will be at a height of 2 meters above the existing site level to avoid floodwater enter the building.
M25 grade of concrete with Fe500 for longitudinal reinforcement and Fe 415 for shear reinforcement is to be used.
The following design IS codes will be required for reference:
- IS 875 part 1
- IS 875 part 2
- IS 13920
- IS 1893
- IS 2911 part 2
- IS 456
- SP 34
Students will have to produce the following:
- Etabs model for the two blocks on either side of the expansion gap
- Foundation details illustrating the pile & pile cap reinforcement
- Tie beam details connecting the pile caps
- Column reinforcement
- Framing plan for typical floor
- Beam reinforcements for ground floor
AIM:-
To carryout modelling, analysis, design, and preparation of construction drawings of a G+3 RCC building situated in Guwahati Assam.
Procedure:-
- First open open the Etabs software.
- Then click on the new modal and then click on unit built setting and set the unit of the modal.

- After that provide the grid and story information.

- Then click on the define option and select material option.

- Then click on add new material properties and then add material as per requirement M25, HYSD415, HYSD500.

- Then click on define option select section properties and then select frame section.

- Add beam(B400X500) and column(C550X550) properties.

- Again click on define option select section properties then slab properties and add Slab 150 and Staircase slab.

- After defining the material then assign Column.

- Then assign Beam from plinth to roof level.

- And then assign slab from first floor to roof level.

- After that define load cases. Provide Dead load, live load, brickwall load, finishes load, Eqx, Eqx+, Eqx-, Eqy, Eqy+, and Eqy-. The we need to assign these loads.

- Now assign the brickwall load as 3.5KN/m.

- Then assign live load take the value as 2KN/m².

- And assign floor finishes load as 1.5KN/m².

- Define the mass source and responce spectrum function.

- Then define load cases and add response spectrum function as RSx and RSy.

- And then define the load combinations.

- After that assign diaphragm to the shell.

- And the assign support to the base level.

- Then go to the analyze option and click on check model.

- And then run the analysis.

- After that check for story drift for RSx and RSy whether it is within the limits or not as per IS1893.

- Therefore both the story drifts are within the codal limits which is 0.004m or 4mm.
- Next carry out the concrete frame design and then extract the design results for beams and columns. Both flexural and shear rebar.

- Check the longitudinal reinforcement and shear reinforcement of beam

- And then check the longitudinal and shear reinforcement of column.

- Therefore the design is completed.
- Now go the the file option click on the export option then export this Base reactions and load conditions in f2k format for footing design using SAFE software.

- Now open the file in safe software.
- After open the file define the material properties.
- Add material properties M25, HYSD500 and HYSD415.

- Then define slab properties and add Pilecap, Column and Pile500.

- After that using draw point option drop the points for footing for each column.
- Now, go to draw option and draft points on footing for the piles to be developed.
- Next we need to provide pile, using the above used option and material property as pile500.
- Then place, the column along grid intersections.

- Then go to the define option and define a beam for tie beam.

- After that assign the spring constant.

- Now click on define option and select load combinations and define SLS and ULS.

- Then go to the design options and select design combinations and then assign the load combinations.

- And then run analysis.

- After that check reaction.

- Now go to the option show punching shear value are within the range.

- Longitudinal reinforcement details for tie beam.

- Therefore the design of Footing is completed.
Result:-
Modelling, analysis and design of G+3 building has been carried out successfully using ETABS software and the foundation design(Pile cap and pile) has also been carried out using SAFE software.
- Reinforcement details associated with modelling has also been included.
- Also all the required details are provided according to the mentioned list-
- Etabs model for the two blocks on either side of the expansion gap
- Foundation details illustrating the pile & pile cap reinforcement
- Tie beam details connecting the pile caps
- Column reinforcement
- Framing plan for typical floor
- Beam reinforcements for ground floor
