Project 2_Analyze and Design the RC office building as per IS standard code in TEKLA STRUCTURAL DESIGNER

AIM

To model, RC structure analyze and design the model elements as per the US codal provisions

PROCEDURE

  • To open a new template in Tekla
  • Go to settings from the home tab
  • Assign the design codes and units to be considered in the model
  • Define the structural default settings
  • Click Ok

STEP 1

To define the Construction Levels

  • Click on the construction levels from the model toolbar
  • Then add the levels in the dialogue box with a given spacing
  • Click OK

STEP 2

  • Click on the grids icon from the model toolbar
  • Specify the first point and drag to draw the first grids
  • Then select the parallel quick grids to draw the other grid lines with a given spacing
  • Similarly, draw the vertical grid

STEP 3

To assign the model elements like columns, beams and slabs

  • Go to manage property sets from the home tab
  • Click on NEW>member>concrete column
  • Then define the size of the column and grade of concrete
  • Click on OK

  • Now go to model tab and select on the concrete column icon
  • Slelect the section from the properties browser
  • Click on the grid intersections to place the column

  • Similarly add the properties of the beam and slab using manage property sets and assign them to the model

GROUND FLOOR BEAM LAYOUT

FIRST FLOOR BEAM LAYOUT

ROOF BEAM LAYOUT

STRUCTURE 3D

  • Now define the properties of the slab and assign slab panels to the model

  • Add wall panels to the model
  • Select the wall panels from the model tab
  • Then assign them to the model

STEP 4

To model staircase

  • To draw the staircse firstly we need to create a sloping planes
  • To create a sloping planes select the corresponding beams and column and add them to the sub structure
  • Open a substructure and select a slopes from the model tab
  • Then click on the nodes to create a sloping planes
  • Then click on beam and add them to a loping planes
  • On which we can place a waist slab

STEP 5

CALCULATION OF DEAD LOAD

  • Self weight of the slab is directly taken by the TEKLA model
  • Dead load of floor finishes

Assume the thickness of the floor finish as 75mm

Unit weight of concrete is 24KN/m^3

Dead load due to floor finishes= 0.075*24=1.8KN/m^2

  • Brick wall loading

Assume the unit weight of brick as 20KN/m^2

Thickness of exterior wall is 230mm

Thickness of the interior wall is 115mm

Height of the first floor is 3.5m

Height of second floor is 3.7m

Brick wall load on the ground floor beams(exterior walls)=3.5*0.23*20=16.1KN/m

Brick wall load on the ground floor beams(interior walla)= 3.5*0.15*20=10.5KN/m

Brick wall load on the first floor beams(interior walls)= 3.7*0.15*20=11.1KN/m

  • Roof loading is assumed as 1.5KN/m^2 as per IS code provisions

FLOOR FINISHES LOAD APPLIED ON SLAB PANELS

BRICK WALL LOAD APPLIED ON THE BEAMS

CALCULATION OF LIVE LOAD

  • Live load are obtained from IS 875 part 2 based on the type of structure and occupancy

APPLICATION OF LIVE LOAD ON THE SLAB PANELS

CALCULATION OF WIND LOADS

  • Assume the basic wind speed as 50m/s
  • Terrain category as 2
  • Design life of the structure as 50 years
  • Assume the structure to be class A

Vz=1.98KN/m^2

  • Height of structure=7.58m
  • Length of the structure=36m
  • Width of structure=16m

Ratio of wall co efficients=l/w = 36/16=2.25

The ratio of roof coefficient=h/w=7.85/16=0.49

WIND LOAD CALCULATION

Wind load + y direction Face A

Wind load + Y direction Face B

Wind load + X direction Face C and D

Application of wind loads to the model

  • To define the load cases
  • Click on loads>load cases
  • Then add the wind load combinations to the dialogue box
  • Click OK

  • Then we need to create frames to assign the wind loads to the model
  • Go to model and click on frames and select on the grid to create frames

Then select the corresponding frame to assign the wind loads

  • To run the analysis, check with the modification factors
  • Then click on 1st order linear analysis from the analyze tab

Axial load diagram

Shear force diagram

Bending moment diagram

  • Now check report

RESULT

With the above step we can design and model the structure as per given plan.

We can add loads on the structure and analyse the structure
