Project 2

Step 1: Modeling

  • Define the geometry and boundary conditions of the structure, including the support locations and cable alignments.
  • Choose a suitable software for modeling, such as Rhino, and create a three-dimensional model of the structure, including the membrane surface, cables, and support system.
  • Assign the appropriate material properties to the membrane and cables, such as tensile strength and stiffness.

Step 2: Form-finding

  • Apply the necessary loads to the structure, such as wind, snow, or live loads.
  • Use a form-finding software, such as Kangaroo or Anaglyph, to obtain the shape of the membrane structure under the applied loads and boundary conditions.
  • Adjust the cable tensions to achieve the desired shape and performance of the structure.

Step 3: Cutting pattern

  • Create a two-dimensional planar template that can be used to cut and shape the membrane material into the desired three-dimensional form.
  • The cutting pattern should account for the curvature of the membrane surface and the necessary assembly allowances.
  • Verify the accuracy of the cutting pattern by comparing it to the original design and ensuring that it will result in a structurally sound final product.

Step 4: Fabrication and assembly

  • Cut and shape the membrane material according to the cutting pattern.
  • Install the membrane surface and cables according to the design specifications, ensuring that they are tensioned properly to achieve the desired shape and performance.
  • Install the support system, such as the frame or the cables, according to the design specifications.
