Project 1 - Meshing of Floor Panel

Project 1 - Meshing of Floor Panel

The objective is to extract the floor's mid-surface and establish a suitable mesh flow with appropriate quality standards in the model.

Goal:

  • Open ANSA GUI and import the given file.

  • Check the model for the cracks and damaged surface and correct it.

  • Run the geometry check to find the errors of the connecting cons.

  • Fix the issues that were found in the geometry check.

  • Then run the geometry check again to confirm that the errors have been fixed.

  • Use a casting method to extract the mid surface of the given component.

  • The casting method gives a mesh with errors.

  • Solve the mesh errors manually by using reconstructing, smooth, split, swap etc.

Procedure:

  • Import the model into ANSA GUI and use the orient option for proper orientation color.

  • Check the model using geometry check and there are errors as seen in the image below.

  • Geometry check is run again to confirm the model is error free after fixing errors of cons.

  • Measure the thickness of the model near all features of the model.

  • Quality criteria and mesh parameters are added.

  • Set the perimeter and macros of the model to the target length i.e. 5 under Mesh>Perimeter>Length

  • Here the casting method is used to extract the middle surface of the model.

  • Skin method is not used because an uncertain middle surface was generated and manual mid surfacing takes a lot of time for complex models.

  • After the casting option the mesh is generated on the middle surface with errors.

  • Clean the errors of the mesh using the options: reconstruct, smooth, split, swap, align manager etc.

Below are the images of final meshed model

In the above image the mesh cannot be seen due to graphics, so i have added zoomed images of the model below.

Here the trias are 5.21% which lies below the quality criteria of 10%.

Results:

  • This experience taught me how to extract the mid surface and apply the right mesh flow when meshing onto the surface.

In summary:

  • The casting method is used to extract the midsurface, and errors from meshing have been eliminated manually.

  • After trying the skin method to extract the midsurface and finding that it was inaccurate,

the casting method was used to mesh the model and extract the midsurface.

  • It took a long time to manually fix the mesh errors because the casting mesh error rate was too high.
