Project 1
IP SUBSTRATE OR DASHBOARD PART MESHING
AIM :
This model comprises of the dashboard subparts of a car or it is known to be IP substrate of a car. So this model is taken for the mid surfacing and then the model is meshed for a good mesh flow, maximum elimination of off elements.
PROCEDURE :
The procedure for this model can be illustrated as same as the previous done model i.e; check for the geometry errors, measuring the thickness of the model which includes ribs, dock house structures, shell body then midsurface extraction, meshing the model.
1.Geometry checks :
Firstly after importing the model the unstiched faces were stiched by using topo tool under TOPO module so the model is stitched together and fall under single shell body. Then fining the model is done to get a better feature view for the user of the model to work on it. So after this operation then the model is done for geometric checks if any unwanted cons were present are removed ( like triple cons, needle faces, unchecked faces, cracked cons etc.,).
The below image shows the model before and after the geometric checks:
2. Measurements : The second operation that is to be carried out is taking the measurements of each and every sub parts of the model so that it can be saved for the future reference in assigning the thickness for various parts in to seperate PID's.
The below images shown were model taken with a sample of measurements as symbolically:
Below image shows the model subparts with different thickness assigned into different PID's :
3. Midsurface Extraction : So after assigning different thickness parts into different Pid's then the model is processed for extracting the midsurface. This phase has to be carried out with a keen care as the mid surface of the model alone represents the whole parent body where meshing and loads were applied in the analysis part. When going through out the model this dashboard sub parts will be having many feature areas from minute to the complex. While taking the midsurface of the IP substrate there was a use for the every tool to extract the mid surface like curves middle, cons2curves, faces middle, create curves etc., which plays the most important work in extracting the mid area of the model so that no feature of the mid is missed out from extraction. So one important thing that should be noted is that while working on a huge models it is better to sub divide the model into different sections and worked for easy dealing with the model that avoids lagging in work with it.
The below model shows the image of the mid surface extracted from the parent body :
After mid is taken the rib features were extended to the surfaces and also intersection of faces to be done if any needed thereafter the rearranging of construction also has a sharp importance that reflects the good mesh flow and captuing of the features that can be viewed in the shadow mode.
4. Mesh generation : So before proceeding to the mesh application the model should be refined to the target element length in the mesh module-perimerters-length, then the model is given with the quality criteria and meshing parameters so that mesh flow should satisfy the given quality criteria.
The below image shows the meshing parameters and quality criteria for the given IP substrate :
After applying the quality and mesh parameters then the meshing is carried out by different meshing alogarithms as according to different feature areas that gives different mesh flow according to the background alogarithm of that mesh tool (batch mesh, free mesh, spot mesh, best mesh etc.;). The always called the hybrid option like split function is used to arrange the mesh flow in a particular order and handles the Trias very well that results in helping when load applied on the model.
The below image shows the mesh flow of the model which is generated on the mid surface of the IP substrate by different meshing scenarios :
The below image shows the meshed surface after drawing it into shell as solid :
LEARNING OUTCOMES :
- Learned the rearrangement of construction lines better than previous
- Learnt to sub divide the single model to work better.
- Learnt to solve quality issues better.
- Learnt to extract midsurface with feacures like shell with minimum thickness.
CONCLUSIONS :
As the complexity of model increases work on achieving the better mesh flow increases and try upto well extent to minimise maximum number of quality issues.
