Project 1 - 2D meshing on the instrumental Panel

PROJECT- 1

2D MESHING ON THE INSTRUMENTAL PANEL

AIM:-

1. To check for the geometrical errors for the "IP Substrate OF A VEHICLE".

2. To mesh with the given element Quality criteria.

3. Meshing the component and assigning the thickness.

PROCEDURE:-

1) IMPORTING THE CAD MODEL:-

1. Open the ANSA software and import the cad geometry by clicking on File>Open>Browse the file from the list. Click OK.

2. As you can see the geometry is not connected and it is showing so many single cons.

3. We can give the Length Parameter as 1 for the better visualization and to refine the model for our workability by going to Mesh Module, under Parameter tab click on Length. Give Length as 1.

4. Perform the topo function to arrange the faces and geometry of the model by selecting the Topo Module>Faces>topo. then make a box selection over our geometry .

5. Now the geometry is connected appropriately and only outer edges are seen with single cons.

2)GEOMETRY CLEANUP:-

1. After doing the topo, we can do the Geometry Check, by clicking on the Checks tool on Tools toolbar.

2. From the window appearing, check in the check list as our requirement, it include options like Unchecked faces, Collapsed Cons, Triple Cons, Needle Faces etc. Click on EXECUTE.

3. The errors appered can be eliminated by Auto Fix, If the auto fix can't eliminate the error we should do it manualy.

4. After clearing all the errors again do the Check.

5. If the window shows 100% with a green strip then your geometry is ready.

6. Uses FACES> ORIENT option to correct the orientation of the geometry.

3)MID-SURFACE GENERATION:-

1. The main part of the component is of 6mm thick and is almost uniform . Its midsurface can be easily generated by FACES> Offset.

2. After clicking on Faces>Offset, select the faces to be offset the give the distance to offset. Click OK.

3. We have done the biggest part, now we can go to the small and complicated parts.

4. One of the difficult part to mid surface in the IP Substrate OF A VEHICLE are the doghouses and rib feature.

5. In order to mid surface rib. We use the FACES>MIDDLE option and form face in the middle.

6. Then we use the FACES>Extend option to make the ribs touch the main surface.

7. Click on Extend, click on the free end of the rib which should connect with the main part and click on the face of main part.

8. After that using INTERSECT to intersect the faces and delete the unwanted faces.

9. Make sure that the ribs are having triple cons at regions where it joins the main surface.

10. Dog house in this model should be captured as "Cross pattern" in Mid surface since dog houses are solid (Hollow from inside) and is not having any thickness.

11. So we extend the ribs to make the Cross patterns.

4) Meshing:-

1. Before starting the meashing we should set the quality criteria. For that select Utilities tab and select Quality Criteria or F11. Set the criteria as our requirements.

Our Required Quality Criteria:-

2. Before starting the meshing process we need to select the delete in Hotpoints in Topo module. to delete the unwanted hotpoints and go to mesh module , select Length under perimeter tab in Mesh Module and give the target length.

3. For meshing a part we can use the Best option in the Mesh Generation tab. Click on Best, chose the face to mesh, middle click

4. After meshing for getting a good quality mesh we can use the Reconsturction or smooth in the shell Mesh tab

5. The quality of the mesh depends on number of rotating quads, trias and errors present. Reduce maximum number of trias , eliminate all rotating quads and errors

6. Most of the opposite trias can be eliminated using Split and Swap in Element tab, also by using Paste option in Grid tab

7. After the meshing , the elimination of errors is done and the off elements reduced to minimum and unmeshed elements are zero.

5) ASSIGNING THICKNESS:-

1) We can now assign the thickness to the parts by going to FACES > Set PID then click on the part which we need to assign thickness.

2) Then from the coming window Right click> New > Pshell.

3) Double click on the property crearted, which will assign that property to the part we selected and giving the original thickness of the parent geometry in the details of the property will give the part the thickness.

6) LEARNING OUTCOMES:-

1. I learned about different tools in ANSA.

2. Learned to make mid surface of simple and complex parts. Especially doghouses and ribs in this challenge.

3. Learned to mesh a geometry.

4. By doing the IP Substrate OF A VEHICLE I have learned how to eliminate errors and trias in different situations by using reconstruct, smooth, split, swap and paste.

7) CONCLUSION:-

  • All the geometrical errors are rectified. The part was meshed with minimum number of errors.
