Project 1

Shear Cleats:

Shear Cleats are basically brackets, they come in all shapes and sizes mostly L-angled brackets attaching butt-straps to main spars and ribs and also used for attaching main structural members to its secondary connecting members.

Procedure:

  1. In this exercise, we will be modeling a 3D model of a shear Cleat.
  2. Extracting mid-surface of the 3D model.
  3. Generate 2D mesh using QUAD4 elements.
  4. Create Loads (load cards) and Boundary conditions sets.
  • Create material properties.
    The fitting is made from aluminum alloy 7075-T7351 with E = 10 x 106 psi and nu = 0.33
  • Create Loads and Boundary conditions
Bolt load of 1000lbf (~4448N) to be applied at the Bolthole shown in the figure (refer to next slide). Use RBE2 (spider element) for applying the bolt
    load.
  • Constraint the hole is shown in the figure below using Boundary condition – SPC 123456 (All Dof’s = 0). Arrest the nodes at this hole boundary.
