Planetary Gear motion analysis using solidworks

AIM:

To design the sun, planet and ring gear to form the planetry gear setup and to perform motion analysis between them, plot the graph for angular velocity with respect to time.

Introduction:

An epicyclic gear train (also known as planetary gear) consists of two gears mounted so that the center of one gear revolves around the center of the other. A carrier connects the centers of the two gears and rotates to carry one gear, called the planet gear or planet pinion, around the other, called the sun gear or sun wheel. The planet and sun gears mesh so that their pitch circles roll without slip. A point on the pitch circle of the planet gear traces an epicycloid curve. The combination of epicycle gear trains with a planet engaging both a sun gear and a ring gear is called a planetary gear train.

Here we have 4 planet gears connected to the carrier, one ring gear and one sun gear are of motion based on various cases.

Objective:

Design of Gears:

Sun gear: (1)

No. of teeth: 14

Module: 2.5 mm

hence pitch circle diameter = Module * No. of teeth

= 2.5 * 14

=35mm

Ring gear: (1)

No. of teeth: 46

Module: 2.5 mm

hence pitch circle diameter = Module * No. of teeth

= 2.5 * 16

=115mm

Planet Gear:(4)

No. of planet gears = 4

Module = 2.5 mm

pitch circle diameter: 40 mm

Pitch circle diameter calculation from assembly:

based on calculations:

pitch radius of planet gear = pitch radius of ring gear - (pitch radius of sun gear/2)

=115-(17.5/2)

=20mm

Diameter of pitch circle is 40mm.

No. of teeth = pitch circle diameter/module

=40/2.5

=16
