MOTION ANALYSIS OF EPYCYCLIC GREAT TRAIN

AIM:

  • To determine the pitch circle diameter of planetary gears using the given data.
  • To conduct the motion analysis of EPYCYCLIC gear train, according to 3 given configuration and obtaining the angular velocity plots of the output

THEORY

  • A gear train having a relative motion of axes is called a planetary gear train or EPYCYCLIC gear train
  • Therefore epicyclic gears are gears whose axis rotate about a fixed axis
  • large speed reductions are possible
  • The condition for the two gears to mate is, its module should be the same.
  • The module is equal to the ratio of pitch circle diameter to the number of teeth
  • Pitch circle diameter is the imaginary circle in the gear, where the two gear mates, having pure rolling motion between them.

SIMULATION

  • First, calculate the pitch circle diameter of the planetary gear.
  • Given data, a module of ring gear 2.5, Number of teeth of the ring gear, and Sun gear 46 and 14 respectively.
  • We know that the condition, for two gears to mate, a module should be the same, using that relation, we obtained diameter of the pitch circle of planetary gear is 40mm and the number of teeth is 16
  • Next in Solidworks ASSEMBLY module, change the unit to "mmgs" and in the toolbox go to ANSIMETRIC in that go to transmission, gears, and select internal and spur gears.
  • Selected gear parameters are correctly entered to obtain the given configuration.

RING GEAR

SUN GEAR

PLANET GEAR

  • Carrier is designed to hold the planetary gears in the assembly

CARRIER

  • Assembly is done by keeping the motion analysis in mind, according to that mates are applied
  • In motion analysis, the input of 200rpm is given to the input gear, and solid body contact is established (dry steel for all the part), one gear is fixed and angular velocity of the output gear is defined in the results

RESULTS

  • Angular velocity plot of the output gear is obtained for each configuration

FIRST CONFIGURATION

  • Sun gear input, Carrier output, and Ring gear fixed
  • Input is 1,200 deg/sec and output is 293 deg/sec,
  • Angular speed is reduced almost by 4 times

SECOND CONFIGURATION

  • Ring gear input, Carrier output, and sun gear fixed
  • Input is 1,200 deg/sec and output is 931 deg/sec,
  • Angular speed is reduced almost by 1.2 times

THIRD CONFIGURATION

  • Sun gear input, Ring gear output, and Carrier fixed
  • Input is 1,200 deg/sec and output is 380 deg/sec,
  • Angular speed is reduced almost by 3 times

CONCLUSION

Hence for a given speed input, High reduction is possible when the ring gear is fixed, sun fear is input, and carrier gear is output.
