GIVEN DATA:

  • Ring Gear
  • Module = 2.5 (You must use the metric system in design modeler)
  • Number of teeth = 46
  • Sun Gear
  • Number of teeth = 14
  • Input Speed of the Gear = 200 rpm.
  • Number of planet gears = 4

INTRODUCTION:

A planetary gear system consists of a ring gear, a sun gear and 2 to 4 planet gears. A carrier connects the centers of the two gears and rotates to carry one gear, called the planet gear or planet pinion, around the other, called the sun gear or sun wheel. The planet and sun gears mesh so that their pitch circles roll without slip. A point on the pitch circle of the planet gear traces an epicycliod curve. In this simplified case, the sun gear is fixed and the planetary gear(s) roll around the sun gear. The combination of epicycle gear trains with a planet engaging both a sun gear and a ring gear is called a planetary gear train.

APPLICATION:

Some of the application is as follows

  1. Hub gear box system
  2. Automated guided vehicle
  3. Curved stair lifts
  4. Mobile satellite receivers
  5. Shutter openers etc.

COMPONENTS:

Sun Gear:

The sun gear has module of 2.5 with 14 teeth on it and a shaft diameter of 22mm. It centers the planetary gear system

RING GEAR:

The ring gear has module of 2.5 with 46 teeth on it and a outside diameter of 46 .

PLANET GEAR:

Planet gear has a module of 2.5 and 16 teeth with shaft diameter of 26.

SUPPORT:

The diameter of the support spindle is of the shaft diameter of sun and planetary gear and distance between planetary support and sun gear support is 37.5mm. This supports the whole sun and planetary gear system

PROCEDURE:

  1. Open assembly file of solid works and insert the support first
  2. Then from design library insert the sun, planetary and ring gear which is nothing but spur gear and internal spur gear for the above mentioned dimensions
  3. Now face mate the spur gears to its respective position with the faces of the support spindle
  4. Now face mate ring gear with sun gear by using coincident option
  5. Now run motion study for the given condition

Basic procedure for motion analysis study is as follows

  1. Specify the contacts between all objects say sun gear, ring gear, planetary gear and support as solid contact
  2. According to the given condition fix one of the object make sure to turn on the temporary axis option. You can enable it from the eye symbol option below the menu bar
  3. Specify the motor axis for the given condition by selecting respective axis and give motor speed as 200rmp and run the analysis
  4. As of plotting the graph go results and plots and select moment/velocity as primary option and angular velocity as sub option
  5. Then select result component as magnitude and select the output component as per given condition. The graph will be plotted.

The final assembly is as bellow

From above results we can note how angular velocity changes for each condition and how it fluctuates around a specific average value. This data are used mainly where the transmission system is engaged
