Challenge

Photo Realistic Rendering

American Chopper Assembly

1.Objective:

To design and assemble an American chopper motorcycle and make the realistic renders of the same. In this project we designed the parts for the chopper and then assembled it to make a complete motorcycle, then set it up in a realistic environment and added the necessary details to make the motorcycle as good as possible. Details such as, decals, setting up scenes, lights, camera etc. Finally we rendered the bike to make realistic images from it.

2. Introduction:

The project was created using SolidWorks, SolidWorks is a powerful design software that lets us make the parts, assemble them and render the assembly. There are a lot of features built into SolidWorks, which makes it able to handle sheet metal design, surface design and even analysis of the parts that are made, there are also several add-ins like PhotoView360 which makes it easy to render the parts and assemblies without the need for any external or third party applications. Besides PhotoView360 SolidWorks also has its own flow simulation add-in, and Motions add-in which makes it easy to conduct simulations, and add motion to parts.

3. Design Methodology/Approach

We started with understanding the user interface of SolidWorks, then we learned the implementation of shell feature by modeling the oil-tank. The linear pattern by modeling the chain. We understood the design process behind modeling the spider webbed wheel rims and also revolved boss and revolved patterns was also learned. Projected curves and revolved cuts were learned and was used to create front forks and both the wheels, composite curves were learned and used to create the gas tank. Furthermore all the tools were utilized to the maximum to model the engine of the American chopper.

Finally the chopper was assembled together and made into a complete motorcycle. The scene was fixed and the lighting was set to make the motorcycle as realistic as possible. We also learned about various display states to make the visual design of the chopper easier without having to change the appearance every time a change is required. We also learned how to make photo realistic renders with the use of PotoView360.

4.Description

Chain was constructed using curve driven patterns

Mirrored Patterns were used to construct engine

Revolve was used to make Fenders

Mirroring and composite curves were used to make front forks.

Circular pattern was used for tire. Revolved Cut was used for Wheels.

Composite Curves were used to make the Gas tank

Linear Patterns were used to make the pedals.

7. Conclusion

In conclusion the American chopper was assembled in SolidWorks using the parts that were 3D modeled using SolidWorks, overall use of SolidWorks was understood and a lot of features were used to complete the entire project. After the assembly the model was used to create realistic renders using PhotoView 360 and SolidWorks Visualizer. The renders created were realistic, operations and usability of SolidWorks was learned during this project
